Default Damage estimate on car a bit high?

    Hi everyone,

I'm about to purchase a car and the Carproof report mentions an estimate for 12 000$ of repairs. It's 2012 Ford Focus which was damaged in a light accident (it's not a rebuilt car). The hood, the right fog light, the right light and the right fender were damaged but fixed by the car dealer. Does cosmetical damage on a new car like that would be worth 12 000$? Is the dealer hiding something or is this expensive to repair since it's a recent car.

    Thanks for your input!

Completely possible. A friend of mine got rear ended a while back. The cost of 1 side panel, a rear window and new hatch, the bumper, and some paint repairs and labour pushed it to almost $8000.

Just thinking that if the hood needed to be replaced, there might have been a new windshield, and definitely a new bumper with that. Possibly an airbag replacement as well. Add in labour, and it's quite possible that is reasonable.

Here are pictures of the damage:

    which is now:

The car is a fully equipped 2012 SE with only 30 000 km. It is still under warranty and the seller wants 12K for it.

    What do you think?

Hmmm.. Hard to tell if anything under the hood was damaged from the photos. Bumper looks like it's been replaced though, as does the driver's side mirror.
Personally, I'd buy it but only if I could take it in to a shop and have it inspected first to make sure nothing serious was compromised but not listed on the report.
A hundred bucks now to save a major headache later is a good investment when you're talking about 12K.

Qft, test drove 2 vehicles. Looked nice on the outside looked like crap once of a hoist. Tons of rust under it (out east car)

If you're close, I would recommend taking it to garage box. Paul is super honest and worked in a body shop before being a mechanic. So he has a good eye for replaced body panels and knows automotives really well.

The car was inspected and I drove it and nothing was found. Since the car is still under warranty from Ford, are there any real risks?

Its possible, I do agree it seems a little high but There is a good chance it damaged to Radiator support, Rad, AC etc which could add up very fast.

Also, the Ford Warranty does not apply to any future issues that are crash related.

Easy to get damage of 12k out of that. Also as mentioned, this changes your warranty coverage from Ford.
One more question, who did the inspection? If it was the dealer who is selling the car, disregard it completely.

Yeah this is not a good investment for that money. You'd also have a hard time reselling the car in the future.

12k is a good downpayment for a base 2013 Focus

There are tons of vehicles that come through my shop for a pre-purchase inspection and a few things are wrong with them, some minor, some major. Brand new "approved" cars from dealership.
