Tesla had a plan from the start to appeal to the masses but this comes in three phases:

Phase 1 low volume high price
Phase 2 mid volume mid price
Phase 3 high volume low price

So far Elon has delivered on phase 1 and 2, there is no reason why he won't nail phase 3. This is a guy who helped create paypal, and basically pioneered 3 multibillion dollar companies after it.

The model x will fall into phase 2 still but then gen 3 version is what everyone is waiting for.

Probably 5-10 years away for my 1st electric car, given that it has no issue operating for -50C to +50C.

There's a new Tesla rolling around Kelowna, and it is a gorgeous vehicle, IMO. It is expensive, but as e36 pointed out, it's kitted out favorably to 5 series, E class, etc. Not getting why is has be compared to a Fit, and deemed less practical (even though it seats 7)?

I see quite a few of these in Vancouver. They are rather popular here. Easy to see why. One girl had her license plate on her Tesla as "GAS-LOL" Pretty funny.

When they roll up it has a special aura. They sound like a car from a futuristic movie like Tron or something. They are eerily quiet. Bet the inside has good acoustics.

Tesla is expected to announce something big regarding its supercharger network today. I really think we're seeing the beginning of something that will be a big part of the future.

    haha c'mon.

Genuine question here, describe your driving habits, and where the reach of sparky-mc'yuppy-car inhibits your life.

I see it affecting weekend road trips personally.

I drove one of their prepproduction models in Seattle a couple of years ago. I can honestly say that that car is better than the M5 in many ways. The power delivery is so smooth and linear. The cabin is incredibly quiet (like the new F10 M5). I think the Tesla *feels* sharper but I have a hunch that the M5 is the better car.

The super charger network will actually allow you to travel all around north America for free! LA to NY will be complete within 6 months. Pretty ambitious but this company is legit. Elon Musk is the real world tony stark.

    0.3kwh/km. A daily 40km round trip would be 12kwh or around $2.

My S4 is around $7 of gas for the same trip.

And the supercharger will take the range anxiety out. Plus I'm sure Tesla is expecting to charge other EV owners for the infrastructure and license the charging tech out eventually.

I'd love a Model S performance package, but at 120k (w/ options) they're out of my reach... for now.

I highly recommend this video for anyone not familiar with Tesla, or even if you are:

Free for now, but imagine if a large proportion of vehicles on the road are electric, that's a large electricity bill, and a lot of energy that has to come from somewhere.

Using Tesla's supercharger network will be free for Tesla owners for life. What I think is Elon is leveraging his relationship with SolarCity to generate this power for free.

Looks like Tesla updated their site with an interactive map of their supercharger network:

A family friend got the Model S Performance with every possible option minus the jumper seats and metallic paint and paid $105K (USD) Guess a 15% premium for CAD is not too bad.

He loves it except the shop let something loose in the car during maintenance which left his car dead on the highway. They fixed it in the city he was heading to, gave him a roadster as a loaner, full set of winter tires and $10,000 credit. The car does have a 1001 features and is pretty damn awesome. With the refuel stations popping up everywhere, this car will be the definite argument to move towards electric. The fact that it can dance with M5's is only icing.
