EIT P.Eng Reference Requirements

[Confusion]

Hi everyone, new to the board here.

Just looking to see if there are any EIT's out there that are currently having trouble seeking supervision/mentor ship from a P.Eng from within the organization you are working in.

Have you been able to seek help from sources outside your company and are you concerned about the requirements for a P.Eng reference when you submit your P.Eng application after 4 years.

I believe that getting supervision from a CET will also work as a reference if that's an option for you.

For your EIT status you can use a P.Eng outside your company, however after the 4 years you will need P.engs within your company for refrences. If there are none at your company, tough titties. Luckily for me there are hundreds of professional engineers at my company, and although I only work directly under 2 I can use the ones way up if they are willing too as well.

Have you called APEGA to ask? I think they would know the answer better than anyone on beyond.


I found this on their website:

To meet the Board's licensure requirements, you will be required to nominate a minimum of three references. They should be professional members who have supervised your work. If there have not been three professional members in your career who have been your supervisors, the Board will allow references from professional members who are familiar with your work, such as co-workers, mentors and clients. As an alternative, the Board may allow references from supervisors who are not professional members, in certain cases.

It's a little hard to believe that you don't have three references in 4yrs of experience unless you are working in a small office.

P. Geos/Eng reference is a must.

It can be either, but not neither.

i used a CET as a reference for a portion of my work experience requirement. Had no problem getting licensed.

For registration I am pretty sure the reference is purely character. You must know a PEng somewhere? Work case ask for an old prof to reference you?

Definitely make sure that you are working somewhere with a few PEng's though. Not the kind of hassle you want to go through unless u want to change jobs in a year for no reason. Also apega is becoming more strict on ensuring you do "engineering" level work rather than just "technologist". Technologist is only worth a max of 6-12 months towards your experience requirements so while you can used a CET as a reference you need some PEng's as well.

I know a friend who used their co-worker as a reference (not even supervisor level). At the time they were working their were both EITs, but when he applied for his P.Eng, his co-worker was already a P.Eng.
