    Angry Frustrated with my shots

Brand new T4i. Lens is an old EF-S17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.
I can't seem to get a sharp image with this thing no matter what I do.

Take a look at this shot. On a tripod, f11, bright skies, iso 100, 1/125, and it still looks about as sharp as a fucking iphone pic.

If it's on tripod, you can try turning IS off.

What was your focal point? Does it look bad at 100%?

dave, where did you focus on that shot?

also can you take test shots of subjects 5-10ft away from you and see if it focus properly and sharp?

was it windy? IS turned on?

Is the firmware up to date? My Nikon had updates a couple of times a year.

Is the QUALITY SETTING on: JPEG Large Fine or even better RAW?

More stuff here to look at (see #13 MENUS, etc as well): http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/cano...650d-rebel-t4i

Sorry guys. I didn't forget about this thread. Just hammered with work the last few days. Also I didn't really post this in the proper sub forum. I realized that when I couldn't find it. Idiot

    Okay....

    • I focused on the the far hill...so "infinity"?.
    • Yes I have the file size on the largest, and highest rez. I've shot RAW, but pretty much the same results.
    • Firmware? Huh? Never checked. Didn't know I had to keep that updated. Is that like driver files?
    • No it wasn't windy, but yes I have the IS turned on.

Here's a couple of other closer shots. Sometimes I get a great shot, but most of the time I'm not impressed at all with them. Even when I use my tripod, and I've got a good Manfrotto.
When I use my 70-200 "L" lens, I'm happy. And I've got a new 1.8 50mm that I like. But my daily "walk around" 17-85 just irritates me. Pretty much just a "snapshot" at best.

Thinking you either have a bad copy or are expecting L series results from a mid-low end lens. Or a combination of both.

The last three shots look decent to me, though.

dave, have you had the chance to test the lens on a different body?

also, from what I've read about the 17-85 (good thing I sold mine years ago) it has some flaws

It should be noted that the 17-85 is not a very sharp lens at all. The corners are incredibly soft and so is the center performance.

Read some reviews and they confirm the 17-85's poor sharpness. Since your L lens gives you sharp results it's the lens.

Step up to a 17-55 2.8 for sharper photos. I love mine, it's quite versatile, good for a walk around lens.
