Blah blah blah. In a rotary thread you mentioned flooded cylinders and a leak down test. Nothing else matters dude, you hung yourself.

How do I let myself get sucked into this stuff. I'm actually having a "go round" with a mechanic who mentioned flooded cylinders and leak down test in a rotary engine thread.

Ugh enough congrats at joining my ignore list. You're in good company

Back in the days where at 20k we had to change the seals but that's another story.
Change plugs and coils..replace oil regardless of how it looks or smells and smoke the engine to look for leaks. Then pull start it don't use the key to crank it over.(unless auto)
    Hopefully it fires up.

While I agree with what you say I don't think it's the only reason for the bad rap. Mazda itself hasn't helped, the amount of blown engines in RX8's that I have heard about is very high, no production car should have that kind of engine failure rate.

It's anecdotal evidence but that is what will kill a non-mainstream technology.

You're right. I should have said "I blame ignorant mechanics in part"

The renesis had major issues, fell short in the power department, and that combined with a not very knowledgeable dealer network, zero support from independent repair shops, and the issues I mentioned of ignorant mechanics not wanting to learn, thought they could apply already known principles, and your left with well, a less than steller rep for the rotary.

Having said that the rotary is not dead as has been suggested. Mazda has shown time and time again, they will adapt it and continue to use it. My hope is the next version is much more successful than the last.

^^ lack of torque/power is an understatement..Hopefully next time they smarten up and add a turbo..or two.
A Ferrari is a high maintenance chick, you spend money regardless of what you do with her. You can baby the C63, or slap on all seasons, and you won't be spending anything but yearly maintenance. Of course that's like dating a stripper and refusing to fuck her, which would make you gay.

Turbo'd rotaries are fun as hell, I don't have an inside track on why they didn't do it with the renesis. I think there was concern for fuel economy and reliability, that and it's my understanding the renesis didn't lend itself to turbocharging as well as previous versions (13BT, and 13BREW), because of the choice to move the exhaust ports.

If fuel economy and reliability were in fact the reasons it makes a guy laugh since ultimately those are the attributes that ended up being the biggest issues anyways.

Too Bad Mazda Speed didn't offer a factory street port. could liven it up some

I remember a beyond member from way back when, compared a rotary to a super model.. How right he was.
It is frustratingly reliable, truly the cockroach of automobiles.

Again I think the Renesis engine was the choking point. The vast success in RX-8 modifications was achieved when a 13BREW was dropped under the hood

LOL yeah after reading the first page I went on kijiji to find a blown one for free that I could take apart and play with... No dice.

The thing I hate most about rotaries is fanboys who are adamant that engine failures are 100% user error. Let be honest, there are some inherent flaws in the design.
