Calgary police say speed is responsible for taking another life in the city.
A woman was killed when her car hit a curb, swerved and hit a tree early Wednesday morning in northwest Calgary.
The accident happened at the intersection of 14th Street and Berkley Gate N.W. at around 3:30 a.m. MT.
The force of the crash uprooted the tree and bent the car in half, said traffic section Sgt. Mike ter Kuile.
“It’s catastrophic. Unfortunately the driver was literally moved from the left front driver’s compartment into the right rear of the vehicle,” he said.
“She was belted in the vehicle at the time, but obviously that won’t make any difference in a case like this.”
The 19-year-old woman, who was alone in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no witnesses.

Holy jesus, how fast does someone have to go to do that?
She's a friend of a friend and the assumption is that she just fell asleep at the wheel and went off. I guess we'll never know.
I saw a CTV video of the report and it was the worst accident they've seen in years. That shows a lot about the damage.
RIP.
Saw that couple weeks back when they closed Northbound 14th and was wondering how fast can you go on EL to wrap around a tree like that.
So that's why there's a roadside memorial there last week. That stretch is supposed to be 70km/h but pretty close to approaching a 50km/h zone. Looking at the damage, I sympathize with the victim's family but find it hard sympathize with the choice of speed she drove at. RIP
I'm trying to find the CTV video but they reported +50km over the speed limit.Originally posted by Xtrema

I don't think anybody falls asleep going that fast, those speeds are too deliberate. Maybe she was high?
RIP regardless
Im thinking something sounds fishy as well. Going out on a limb and either drunk or high.Originally posted by woodywoodford

Unfortunate accident to be sure but maybe it's best not to jump to conclusions about the state of the driver.

I suspect it was a conscious decision to be going that fast...no way you can doze off and be at those speeds (except under cruise control).
Or stuck accelerator.Originally posted by nobb

120 coming down that bend towards a light, not in control, something got to be off.
This was one of my sister's friends. We'll never know what the cause was but every time I drive by that area I wonder what could've happened to hit a tree at that spot.
The autopsy determines if the victim was on something. Haven't heard a followup on the news so I assume there was no issue.
Usually the media likes to follow-up on a crash if it involves alcohol, drugs, or some sort of mechanical failure.
Usually takes 2 weeks for drug results from autopsy
Very sad
RIP
If you fall asleep at the wheel, can your foot not push down on the accelerator? Or if you suddenly wake up and realize what's happening and you panic and hit the accelerator in an attempt to slam on the break? It seems to me that there must be some explanation other than that she was under the influence.Originally posted by nobb
