Ever make it out there and figure out if the area is a choss pile? Bouldering wise we usually stick to big rock for inner city ish stuff although a lot of it is pretty high ball. If the cliffs are stable and there is no hilariously bad overhead danger of rock fall might be a nice area to bolt if we can figure out the access issues.Originally posted by syritis
holy shit thats perfect. i've been searching for the last few months for an outdoor location to boulder that is close enough to use in just an afternoon.
anyone know where?
Looking up the definition of choss, I would call those cliffs as being very choss-like - all sandstone.
Then again, I'm not a climber so it might be safe for bolts - note that this may be on private property but I've never seen any owner down here. Certainly there's been a lot of public use in this area - even evidence of group camping to the NW of the cliffs.

Thanks for bumping this as I totally missed it! These are friggin sweet! Where did you park? Oops nevermind, zoomed in and saw the parking lot

Bump, it's been a year and a bit - just curious if any beyond members ventured out to this area?

Thanks for bumping. I read the first page and immediately thought of Big Hill Springs provincial Park, which I visited last weekend.Originally posted by speedog

The X5 i bought earlier this year really is FULLY LOADED though not a single option missing including infrared night driving
I have been there about 2 or 3 times after seeing this thread, it is definitely a nice little spot! Will probably end up going again this year.Originally posted by speedog

No I totally forgot about this. Think I'll head out there Friday!

What I find is that it's a nice but short hike that really makes you feel that you've gotten away from the city even though you're right on the outskirts of the city. You also don't run into very many people hiking out to that cove if any. Have seen trout coming to the surface in that cove and there's always the rope swing one could try out on hot summer days. The more adventurous would probably try their hand at bouldering or even climbing the choss cliffs there. There's also a few geocaches hidden there and along the way for people into that.

Checked it out on Sunday. One of the best short hikes I've ever done. Didn't encounter anyone until I was on my way back. Unfortunately there's some graffiti on the rock formations now, but aside that, really tranquil spot to hang out.
This is one of the lookout spots on the way up:

I did this hike today. Was really nice except really muddy by the power towers.
For whomever cares, pictures of this area taken by geocachers who have been in the area doing their thing - link. It is a really beautiful and wild area - I just hope the CoC doesn't screw it up in developing Bearspaw Legacy Park. That would mean keeping paved paths and such out - make it at most like Douglas Fir Trail in Edworthy Park.
is the water there safe to swim in and do people do so regularly there?
Missed this, water is safe to swim in, have seen people eater skiing out on the lake. Big rope swing in place last time I was there but don't often see anyone there and only once have we encountered other people there.Originally posted by ekguy
