Default Copyright troll legal firm hit with sanctions.

Cliffs: This law firm uploads porn to the torrents, then sends a demand letter to everyone that downloads it. Not wanting to be named in a copyright violation lawsuit for porn (and the potential enormous fines for such copyright violations), defendants quickly settle for thousands each. Firm makes millions.

Until one guy stands up to them and uncovers the truth.

Hahaha...ME?? Hell no, I'm proud of all my porn!! No hiding here. I'd be screaming from the rooftop if some lawyer tried to shame me into a settlement.

Isnt it a much bigger fine for uploading than downloading? IS the "law" firm in big trouble?

    This is pretty funny!

^Toma, it's not a problem to upload and distribute, if you own the copyright, which the firm and/or their clients did.

How this becomes a problem is that they can't have it both ways - they can't give you something that they are entitled to give you, then complain that you are violating their copyright by you taking it. That's how the law firm is getting into big trouble - basically they were entrapping the people that they sued.

I remember reading an article before about some shitty B movie that the film makers couldn't get a distribution deal for. They ended up using this model - they released their shitty movie out on torrent sites, then sued all the downloaders they could find. As I recall, they ended up making more money that way than they could from actually making a proper deal.

They even named the movie so that it would get more attention from downloaders - "Nude Nuns with Big Guns" or something like that. I don't remember if they got into any trouble or not.

ETA: I looked up the Wired Article I remembered reading about this strategy: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/03/bittorrent/

It also mentions this litigation strategy in relation to adult movies, and how this litigation is designed as a profit centre, not merely protection of their rights.

The Wikipedia page for Nude Nuns says that their lawsuits were eventually dropped and the film production company went bankrupt. Good.
