Default Theft from vehicle LOCKED doors

Not sure if this has already been identified on this board, but I wanted to share this information to make more people aware of what appears to be an advanced way of breaking into vehicles.

On August 1st two vehicles parked in my driveway, both locked and one with an activated alarm system were broken into. The alarm did not go off and there was no damage to either vehicle. The door was left ajar in one of the vehicles, the other was shut.

When we discovered the theft in the morning, we started to question if we really did lock the vehicles. As we asked our neighbors they said their vehicles weren't broken into, however, when we looked down the street we found a sunglasses case and a makeup bag. It was then that our neighbor realized his vehicle actually had been broken into. Doors that were locked, were now unlocked and some of his personal items were also missing.

None of us could understand how the thieves could do this and get past the security system in one of the trucks. That was until I read this...

    http://www.today.com/news/police-adm...fts-6C10169993

    or this...

    http://www.thepassinglane.ca/2013/06...echnology.html

"You think when you lock your car and set the alarm, your car is pretty safe. But criminals have designed a new high-tech gadget giving them full access to your car. It's so easy, it's like the criminals have your actual door remote"

Anyway, just spreading the news... as it would seem this is what happened to me and several others in my community.

Special shout out to the useless thieving thugs among us.

With how much they charge for new trucks you would think they would use encryption. My 40k Audi is encrypted up the ass. Tilt sensors too. New keys cost 2 grand.

Thanks. I didn't realize this trick has been on the go for so long. I tried to search for similar experiences and came across the news from the US.

It's insane that you can't even trust locking your vehicle or better yet having a car alarm. In response I went out and bought a motion detector/alarm for the front driveway. Next time someone decides to make an unwelcome visit, I'll know about it!

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Don't be fooled here, the price of the key has nothing to do with how good the encryption is. Any encryption can be broken by brute force, it's just a matter of how long it takes. Usually it's easier to just slim jim it open or smash a window. There's no stopping someone who is that dedicated to break in your car or want to steal it.

Had this happen last summer too although I cant be sure that I didn't leave my doors unlocked, although it is VERY rare for me to do that.

Trick is to not leave anything in your car worth stealing... they went through mine and I couldn't find anything missing. They even left the change in my cupholder......

So you're saying it's cheaper if someone steals your car than if you lose your keys?

Funny that this got brought up. My car was "broken" into last week. Like another member said, I don't usually forget to lock my car. I always press the lock button twice, and it was also an acura. I was pretty stumped... Did lose some items but I had nothing valuable in the vehicle so that was the only up side to this. Who ever did it, obviously has done it before, they even left my door slightly open to insure not to make any noise.. Feel vilolated.. god damn.

Car starters usually disable the factory alarm which has encryption so the code changes every time.

Car starter signals are pretty weak I imagine, no different than a garage door opener.

You realize thieves can open your door without leaving a single mark or damage especially on an Acura right? How do you think tow truck guys open your doors? You think these guys will use some high tech to open an Acura? LOL

So base on the Jalopnik article, if your fob is within 8m away, crooks can clone and repeat the signal. No too far fetched with you have cars in driveway and still have the keys in range.

Got it used. '09 A3 3.2. 56k brand new. Guess it would have made more sense to quote the origional price

Had no idea about that VW hack. May have to buy an APR chip just for the security code feature. Maybe they can just bypass that too. Dang.

Guess the only 100% secure method is to keep a pitpull in the car.

Here's a cheap solution that doesn't need to be fed or walked - I went out and bought a motion detector and installed it in the front driveway. Next time I get an unwelcome visit in the middle of the night checking out my vehicles, I'll know about it!

Youll also know everytime a cat walks by, and eventually will stop looking everytime it comes on. At which point youll be hit again.

Hook the motion sensor to a loud speaker recording of a dog going apeshit in your garage. That'll take care of both the cats, and prowlers, lol

so far the neighbors cat that he lets run wild hasn't been picked up. I have it mounted high enough doesn't seem to be a problem. Took a few attempts to find the 'sweet spot', but I think it's in a good location. Next challenge is what happens when it's rainy or windy, that I haven't tried yet... The recording isn't a bad idea though.
