I do agree with this article.. What the RCMP are doing are not in the spirit with which that law was passed.

I do agree with you but more often than not, there's a very good reason why it's a double solid. Not everyone drives a 500HP supercar, and dotted lines need to cater to at least most drivers. Other times, it's maybe a bend, a dip in the road, perhaps houses, etc...

On another note, one thing I do like is night driving... 1) no traffic, 2) fewer police and 3) passing is cinch.. As soon as I see dotted lines and no oncoming headlights, it's off I go! So much easier to "see" at night (in regards to passing).
You have a couple of photos that are great... you must be very good at photoshop!

Instead, they APPEAR to be going faster because you have to speed up to pass them. This is compounded if there are a bunch of others in front who want to overtake as well.

And there's a good way to prove it: next time you're driving behind someone going at or under the limit, see if the speed changes when you hit a passing zone. Chances are, it doesn't.

Anyway, yeah, those passing zones are stupid if this is what police are going to do.. I do agree that highways are dangerous but speeding by itself isn't usually a factor - it's being an idiot on the road (and that includes falling asleep behind the wheel).

There's really only 1 solution: just don't go to BC.
^ LOL obviously you never drive anywhere... this happens all the time. Driving along following the train of people going 80 in a 90 zone, then passing lane, up to 110-120 then back to 80...totally a wtf situation.

Also Rage I think it's purely people don't want to be passed, sort of a sense of competition, same mentality in rush hour where people will speed up to block you. I don't think it's anything to do with comfortable in a twin lane vs single lane. It is F$&king annoying a f$&k though lol.

Pick a speed and drive people, also use the f'n cruise control.

God bless all you bait car drivers. Blasting through passing zones well above the limit and clearing out all the cops for me. Still make it to the coast in around 10 hours.

    Don't ever change.

Lol, maybe the traffic in front of him was doing under the speed limit because they knew about the speed trap????

I can't count the number of times a slow driver in front of me has saved me from a ticket... had they not been there I would of been speeding and pulled over.

People do speed up when you pass them, maybe they don't realize they are doing it. You have your cruise set at 110 and are coming up on the vehicle in front of you fast. You change lanes and are still coming up on them fast. Then when you are beside them suddenly they are pulling away.. you still have your cruise at 110 and then you have to change lanes back behind them again or mat it and get in front.

    Its annoying.

I drive to radium almost every weekend, I find that people take the corners way to slow and then resume a faster speed on the straights which just so happen to be passing zones. I go to a RV park and someone from Calgary at the park got this almost the exact same way. A bunch of people are writing emails based on some of the articles posted here stating that they are using the law in a way in which it was not intended. That the tickets are just and the impounding is not right. There are about 8 of them right now including the one that got caught that are no longer going to be a part of the RV park and are going to take their golf vacations south to the states rather than BC.

In B.C. a total of 18,837 vehicles have been impounded due to excessive speeds since impound laws took effect in September 2010
Good to know they collect stats, now who has the yearly offense count for Flight from a Peace Officer. In my opinion they are incentivizing more dangerous behavior.

BC people aren't stereotypically known for a "clear thought process".

Sometimes the sun gets it really right.

    Article

It echoes a similar case from July, when four Alberta women in their 20s were reduced to hitchhiking along Hwy. 5 after losing their car to police.

That case led to criticism of the lack of chivalry shown by officers, given that the road in question is listed as dangerous by RCMP investigating the Highway of Tears case, and the women had no way home.
You know...all the tough talk about BC RCMP charging people who use jammers with obstruction...Thats a damn sight better than being stranded in the middle of nowhere. Jam them. If they decide to charge you with obstruction AND tow your car based on a visual estimation then at least you get a free ride into town over a charge you can beat in court later!

I wrote to the BC gov about this law and got the whole street racers causing deaths, saving lives by curbing excessive speed is of utmost important spiel.. Government isn't honest with itself or the public, and then police and politicians wonder why people detest them..

So if they are saying it was unsafe to leave those women on that highway (assuming due to women having gone missing before) what do they do in winter if you are speeding? What if you have multiple small children? Even in summer it could be dangerous to walk on the highway, areas with no cell reception etc.

Leave you on the side of the road in the cold? Why do they at least not make it a law that they have to drive you back to the police station if they impound your car?

They are supposed to ensure you are safe, a ride in the cop car being the last resort. Just heard BC police chief say so on the news.

People do speed up in certain passing zones because they have more visible space, and suddenly realize - oh shit Ive been holding people up I better speed up a bit while the road is nice and wide/straight. The once back in single, winding roads, or any hills...right back down.

Nice assumption to make when you have absolutely no fucking clue how much I drive.. And you obviously haven't tried following someone without passing them at every opportunity.

Again, aside from what was explained before re. truckers taking a run at hills, from what I experience, assuming you are the first car behind the person you need to pass, they are generally NOT speeding up during a pass zone; again the PERCEPTION is that they do speed up. And if you are the 2nd or 3rd or 4th car that needs to pass the first one, then that perception is inflated because now you really need to build up speed to pass that first car.

All I have to say is, I don't think any of you guys are hanging back (i.e. following the lead car) and seeing if their speed actually changes or not. Yes there are people that do speed up in passing zones (and they're usually douchebag types) but again, having driven my crappy Matrix on a few roadtrips and not being to pass, I know now that people GENERALLY do NOT speed up in pass zones - it's just the perception that they do from the people that need to pass.

Yes having said what I did - I do agree here - CERTAIN passing zones but most of the time, people don't speed up. I do notice one thing: many people don't look at their speedos; they use traffic around them as a gauge of how fast they're going, and tend to speed up when traffic around them speeds up.

One pet peeve I do have is people that speed up/speed down and have NO FUCKING CLUE they're doing it. I'd rather follow someone doing a constant 95 in a 100 zone than someone who does 110, then slows to 80, back to 100, down to 70, then 90, then 110, etc... Or there's the fucking clowns that drive 75 in an multilane 80 zone (like Crowchild), you pass them, then they very suddenly accelerate to 100, then back down to 70.. WHY??? They're not necessarily being douches, they're just being fucking stupid.

I usually see this with cars that have very little power. They slow down easy, require more throttle to get going. I remember when I had my first POS escort it required constant play on the pedel to keep a consistant speed on the highway. You had to floor it to get going and if you hit a hill, or any sort of wind, you would slow down. Unless you floored it. Cruise control would not keep a constant speed. It varied 20km/h depending on wind, incline and how may bugs I was hitting.

A car with balls is easy to keep at a constant speed.

Yep, some people just don't have any sense of speed.

I don't know what would bother me more. Some asshole speeding up on purpose so nobody passes, or someone so completely unaware of their surroundings that they are speeding up 40km/hr once it opens up to 2 lanes.

He was passing, the entire idea is you do it quickly so you don't end up either running out of road and coming up against oncoming traffic.

They shouldn’t be allowed to ticket people who are in the middle of executing a pass on single track roads or when passing zones are short.

Futher more, people who pass at the speed limit when you have limited opportunities to get by (when there is a line of cars waiting) should be shot in the face.

I nearly got busted passing at 140kph on 93 south a few years back. My radar detector blipped, I aborted and pulled behind my target. I got ticketed for 110, they got 130 and towed LOL
