i wanted a golf r but there were none when i was looking and i doubt when this comes out, there will be many around.

id be hesitant about driving a vw for almost 40+k but i think its a great package and i love the size of the car itself.

but that interior makes me jelly!

    Awesome car.

Love what they did to the weight/chassis/engine & turbo upgrades. Not digging the variable rack, they're usually quite numb. Also the hatch factor is wicked for utility.

Personally I would want to somehow testdrive one of these, especially with XDS+/DCC and all the other electronic features. I don't think you could do that with the last gen Golf R, and by the time reviews were coming out it seemed like they were sold out. I guess they know they'll sell out so why have demos.

As for the evo, its had (since 2008) and still has a more advanced drive train. Yea, you don't get a lot for your money on the surface, but people don't buy an Evo for an interior/reliability/mileage/comfort. They buy it for the performance platform that allows for ridiculous performance levels. Everything can be built (Engine, transmission (5speed or TC-SST), transfer case/diffs) to be bullet proof. The ECU is very customizable and you rarely need aftermarket EMS. You can reflash/remap the active centre diff for your the specific driving needs. You can reflash/remap the TC-SST transmission for the way you want it to shift. Would love to have one of these someday.

Weird that the Audi is the one with the golf ball shifter.

VW will present a lighter, more powerful Volkswagen Golf R Evo at Beijing Motor Show in April

Volkswagen will unveil a more extreme version of the Golf R at the Beijing Motor Show in April, an inside source has revealed. Presented as a concept car initially, with a production model likely to follow, the stripped out hot-hatch is expected to be badged Volkswagen Golf R Evo.

    • Volkswagen Golf review

The standard Golf R produces 296bhp and 380Nm from its 2.0 TSI engine, and sends power to all four wheels via a Haldex 4MOTION system. Expect the Golf R Evo model to receive a small bump in power, but the real performance gains will come from reducing weight.

Replacing the rear seats with a roll-cage, using thinner bucket seats in the front and fitting lighter alloys, along with a carbon-fibre roof and sections of carbon-fibre bodywork, would slash the R’s 1,476kg kerbweight. If VW can cut around 100kg, that would bring it into line with the front-wheel drive Golf GTI despite a significant power advantage.

Audi, a fellow VW Group manufacturer, showed exactly what’s possible with lightweight materials with the Audi TT ultra Quattro at the 2013 Worthersee tuning show. That car removed 299kg from the standard TT S’s kerbweight through extensive use of carbon-fibre for bodywork and structural elements, along with innovative plastic coil springs and carbon-ceramic brakes – ideas that could be applied to the Golf.

Our source also confirmed that a more extensive range of R performance parts will become available within the next two years. These will include engine upgrades, bigger brakes and electronic assistance systems, on top of the existing range of R-line bodykits and wheels.

I'll be pissed if they start selling Volkswagen Racing goodies in-house that doesn't void warranty.

They needed this for the MK6!

I do not see why it will void warranty. Just look at BMW Performance Parts

If installed during production, it's backed by the 4 year factory, if installed at port, it's 2 year warranty. Both options do not void warranty in any way.

But they are 4X the price of aftermarket

Jamie from vortex said something like this might be produced in Mexico eventually. I think it might be a RS3 in golf form... the real question is how many of you would pay 50 + grand for a Golf RS/Evo ?

A Mexican made $50k Golf, only the enthusiasts will care, I'd guess no more than say a 1/6 of North American's (maybe even less) know or really care about where their vehicles are made.

I for one care, if I buy a new car (especially if it costed $50k+), I'd personally like my German car to have a W at the beginning of the VIN, Japanese cars to have a J, American car to have a 1(exception maybe for the Challenger which had a 2 VIN since it's is built in ONT) etc, some people may disagree but I always believe there's a certain higher level of pride in workmanship/build quality if the brand is manufactured in it's homeland.

I never understood why at the North American unveiling they brought a 2 door Golf R ... that you can't buy in North America... I think it looks much better as a 2 door.

    Evo UK review:

I agree that the RS/Evo should be made in Germany when you start getting into the 50k+ range but even the new NSX is being built in Ohio

AG group just like to tease us.... they will wave all these cars in our faces and at the end of the day, it was just something they will either release to Europe only or not at all.

And yes, I for one care that my German car begins with a W.

You're using Ontario again with freight/pdi and ~~ 20% HST

Fully loaded GTI 5 door DSG looks to be $36,085 which is right around what 2013s were. So given that the R should be right around $40,000. These are pre fee/tax prices which is what everyone seems to quote (CLA/A3/S3 etc)

I don't get why the lease tool is live? They won't honor the residuals which are super high for a car that's not going to be available for months

So it's true we will only get the crappy 5.8" NAV screen. Sigh.
