So what is the real story behind this?

Did someone try to import this vehicle, and they said its not old enough and then said we have to crush your vehicle?

or did the importer try this several times?

    I mean its a land rover -

Its all about protectionism. The "x" year rule wouldn't exist if it weren't. That said, the NAS LR ceased production in the late 90's, all it was was an exo-roll cage and a few alteration to the lights.

The newer ROW spec vehicles with the Puma diesel and 6spd manual are much better vehicles; too bad they're so new and we can't even have them in Canada

    Thems the rules.

Possibly protectionist sure. But they might get around to banning cars from the road over a certain weight, just like they can ban regular 60 and 100 watt lightbulbs from sale or purchase. Even more so, is not letting people save a few pounds of copper (penny confiscation)

I can imagine that if there is indeed peak oil, that they will allow no more than one car per household (sort of like China had a one child per family rule)

On the scale of oppressiveness, the requirement to have that car be destroyed is pretty minor, as are all the other small things that are being taken away.

You kids better figure out some sort of free energy soon. I look at this and just see lower gas prices for everyone now that an overweight vehicle has been taken off the road. California extra tax and insurance on overweight vehicles may pass soon. California ban on large soda pops (tax on fat people) also in effect.

The argument for this based on environmental (eg. fuel economy) reasons are silly. Sure, go ahead and tax larger, worse fuel economy vehicles...but simply destroying a vehicle that has already been produced and running fine is a huge waste of resources in terms of the energy and materials required to have produced the vehicle in the first place.

In the bigger picture, any excuse the government uses to take slightly older, perfectly functioning vehicles off the road in place of newer ones are solely for economic reasons to drive up sales/spending and NOT for any actual environmental gains.

Side note: If you want to invest in something "rarish" for a car, get a license plate.

The US seems to be getting into the $10 million range for a rare license plate, prices usually only commanded by saudi kings on middle eastern plates.

That is the argument from a Detroit carmaker producers point of view. The same argument could be made for building a toy train set that takes up a whole room, it took tons of money to build (and you even have to pay to heat and light the room its in) But when it comes down to it, your grandkids may play with it for 15 minutes and then go back to playing videogames. If you had to rebuild it, it would cost a lot, but how much energy did you expend to actually get the minimal amount of return or usage on it?

If gasoline gets to $15/gallon, how many Hummers are going to be on sale for $30 (thirty dollars, no K)?

Such is the warning to anyone who has "invested" in multiple vehicles.

"The new American Dream is to one day be able to move out of your parent's basement and rent from Blackstone." < Ain't no house or car in there.

If they are that worried about safety in imported products they should shut the door to all the Chinese crap that's being forced upon us.
Obviously steering columns that have plastic bearings in them and lead in kids toys is less dangerous.

Damn, that picker looks mighty fun to operate. Wish I could play with it and destroy a few scrap cars.
