Default Land Rover defender seized by US customs - video

Pretty strict on their 25 year law down there.

Yah that's pretty lame, how is a 25 year old car safer than one of those defenders?

well... nothing to do with that... they explain at the end - importer tried to make it appear older than 25 - so basically it's had its VINs tampered with.

Once VIN plates are tampered with - the car isn't really resellable; as there's forever a question as to its legitimacy right... Could be stolen, could be legit, nobody knows without insane legwork.

I think Top Gear (UK of course) should take that clip and run with it. Point out how even though it was legal on UK roads and apparently not 25 years old, it was "unsafe", but still took several dozen direct hits from a picker crane to kill it. Hell, even when they were pounding on the engine bay, it clearly still would have rolled on all four wheels.

I was more thinking of just the import process in general, especially when you can technically import what ever car you want to the US, given the right paperwork and that it comes in through the right state.

I remember reading the DOT laws for Importation a few years ago, and there are loopholes a plenty, but they just need the right channels, most of wich cost so much money it makes it pointless to even try bringin a non NA production car over.

It's all about protecting american business interests, nothing more.
I'd vote for him. America may have a black guy, but we'd have captain fucking Kirk.

Its long past its prime, moving that much tonnage around just for the sake of burning gasoline is costing everyone.

I can imagine that they will require it for 10 year old computers as well. There are tons of pre-2000 computers sucking down hundreds of watts in electricity per hour and are functionally less capable than a modern tablet that sips down battery power measured in ounces and milliwatts and lasts all day.

California will probably be the first to ban and require destruction of old computers, just like they did the old style lightbulbs.

Just a sign of the times. If you want to save it, donate it to a museum. This being a car enthusiast forum, its hard to tell people that their car might be worth less than a buck, but you know - *reality*.

An unused car is a little like a model train set:

The only thing I'm doing when looking at that is calculating scrap value.

Its at that odd period of time where its just old enough to not have a catalytic converter (making it instantly worth another couple hundred dollars) but not two generations old - where it would command a high price as being rare.

$30 is harsh, that more of a 2006 price. Its more like $150 in scrap value. That someone tried to modify it completely destroyed any collector value. Its like a fake signature on an old movie poster, the movie poster is usually worth hundreds by itself, but as soon as a fake signature is put on it - its value goes to zero.

I would have some fun with it driving up and down the scrap pile before destroying it.

Pretty good chopsticks skills pinching the tires.

Hard to watch a perfectly good LR get crushed like that.

This is just blasphemy and painful to watch. Atleast take the usable parts and sell them. But of course, being America, lawyers will chase after every penny they can get from liability concerns.

Keep in mind, this is just one vehicle. Remember the Cash for Clunkers ordeal? Perfectly functioning old vehicles scrapped for no reason other than to encourage new car sales and profits.

Seems like most of the people so quick to pass judgement here didn't watch the actual video. The car was destroyed not because it was newer than 25 years, but because the vehicle (and accompanying paperwork I'm sure) had been manipulated to make it appear older than that so it could be imported. The us has rules about what can and can't be imported into the country - just like Canada does. If someone is fraudulently importing a vehicle, it gets destroyed. Big deal.

    Said nobody ever

I didn't think I'd ever see the day someone said "perfectly good" and "Land Rover" in the same sentence

Fradulently alterting it to appear older is not strange as it sounds. Some things were just made better a century ago.

But it has to be destroyed because if one thing has been altered, anything is and everything in it is probably altered - and is a safety hazard.

    Exactly.

The customs officer was just saving him from having to pay thousands in electrical and drive train repairs.
