In 1951, though, the Supreme Court of New Jersey decided it was too dangerous to allow just anyone to pump gas, suggesting that the process of refueling is best left to the professionals.

Predictably, there have been attempts to change the law. In 1988, a judge issued a ruling that it was unconstitutional to disallow Americans the right to pump their own gas, but it was later overturned by a court of appeals. And again in 2006, governor John Corzine attempted to put self-service stations along the Turnpike, but the voting public said 'No Thanks.'

And so it remains illegal to pump your own gas in Jersey. Of course, the next time it's raining or snowing or sleeting and you need to fill up, something tells us you'll understand...

I've been in Alberta now for 2 years and become accustomed to the idea of being able to fill before having to pay.

I went to BC couple weeks back and totally forgot and thought how idiotic it was as I don't want to waste more time than I already am filling up for gas.

pre-pay with credit card at the pump isn't a waste of time, but having to pre-pay inside sucks balls.

The problem is you can't even pre-pay with Canadian credit card at the pump in US. Always has to walk in.

US prepaid AMEX/VISA gift card works well tho.

Except there are still a lot of gas stations that don't have the ability to pay with credit or debit at the pump.

except when you are traveling, I don't see why you would go to those. I only buy gas at stations that have this feature, like Centex.

Use 00000 as your ZIP code and you're good to go.

If that doesn't work, try this:

Tip is direct from MasterCard Canada's FB page. I used it 2 days ago at a Shell in Atlanta and it worked perfectly.

    Yep, gone forever

Expect contactless (PayPass/Paywave/Xpresspay/Interac Flash) soon though... inside terminals first and then pay at pump later on.

haha I did this years ago at Shell in Mckenzie. Got a call from CPS on my cell while I was driving back to BC and felt like an idiot. He laughed and just said come back and pay it next time you are in town.

nice, have to try that Visa trick in the US then, have to remember 30101 for me.

btw about forgetting to pay, I just did it 2 weeks ago.
I was filling up a car rental before returning it and was on the phone, hang up and jumped into the car and started driving. Then I see the gas store owner running and calling me, it clicked me that I forgot to pay.

Gas stations still allow people to fuel up before paying? Wow. Just begging for trouble given how expensive gas is these days.

    You'd figure they'd all be pre-pay now.

I've never seen a 100% pre-pay only station in Alberta.
