Default Safeway "Donate $1 to Breast Cancer" Where does the money actually go?

A woman in line said "no thank you" when asked by the cashier to donate = the cashier was surprised that she spent 300 or so - the woman said it was not about the $1 it was about where that money is actually going. CEO salaries?

Some one will get paid. Is the result worth what you are paying for, that's the question. Can it be done with 100% volunteering, unlikely.

Would she donate if she knew the percentage? unlikely. There is nothing wrong with not contributing though.

With Safeway, they collect all those monies, then make a donation to the charity. The nice part for safeway is that THEY get the tax break for the donation that you make through them.

It's a great deal for safeway.

The will however issue you a tax receipt for any donations over $20.

Not all charities are created equal. Some spend a much alrger percentage on marketing and salaries than others.

there is always the argument that you need to pay high salaries to attract top level management, just like the for-profit sector.

Anyway, one place to look is http://www.charityintelligence.ca/
You can see some pretty big differences between charites.
The Calgary Food bank uses approx 94% of funds for programming, while the Alberta Cancer Foundation spends approx 30% on programs, and the rest on professional fundraising and adminstration costs.

I used to be one of those people that thought that a lot of money donated goes to the wrong places, although I'm sure it still happens this video really changed my mind. People should be rewarded for their good work, period, doesn't matter if its a big corporation or charity.

    This.

I never donate through a 3rd party for this reason. I make the donations directly to the charity.

You're not far from the mark.

First, it goes to fatten the cats that broker this arrangement.

Next, a great deal gets funnelled to Big Pharma, who have duped a great number of well intentioned folks into bankrolling R+D.

Ironically, people that freely give to "Charities" would balk at giving spare change to a street person.

"Charity" is one of these modern concepts, like "Natural" that evokes a halleluyah choir at the same time it shuts down critical thinking.

What pissed me off is those buy a family a goat/pig/chicken BS from Worldvision.

We know we ain't shipping out farm animals to them. It's just 1st world $ fucking the 3rd world economy. Who the hell can afford a goat when bible thumpers are coming in with shit load of cash pay over market for them?

Given the awareness and total donations for breast cancer, there has to be some crazy overhead costs. No other cancer gets nearly as much money or attention.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation that Safeway donates to was given a 'D' grade for spending ratio and 'C+' for cost to raise money. Certainly not my first choice in charities.

    Salaries

Based on this alone I would not donate, I hope it is the right charity. 2 people at the charity make over $250k per year...

I don't begrudge top executives making a big salary if the operation as a whiole is run with discipline.

That is true, and you won't get a top executive if you don't pay for one. It's not like they're running a chari....

    Oh.

    Yeah, and it's completely unfair.

I don't believe in the big pink machine and I'm done with it, I don't support it. Does that mean I don't support charity? Nope. I just don't support that one. If you don't like it, too bad.

You pay less, you attract lower quality executives. You get what you pay for.

This is the truth and, somewhat the point of my previous comment.

The VAST majority of people will make no significant contribution to charity unless there is something to gain from it.

Whether that gain be social, financial, corporate P.R. or whatever the case may be, there are very few who give anything of real significance without some kind of kickback.

Holy fuck, ain't that the truth.

When I refused to participate in the whole anti-bully campaign day earlier this year, and articulated why, everyone quite vocally went after me, and could not understand that they had become exactly what they were trying to stop.

    Boggled my mind.

However, I used to work for the Calgary food bank as a driver and donation collector. Yes, it was my full time job. They paid me fairly well, but the perks of the job were what kept me there. All the charity events and such were awesome, and I scored some awesome stuff from the donations. (Let me clarify that too. Some times we would get a donation of something completely useless to the foodbank, like a floor jack. I could take the floorjack for myself for a monetary donation to the foodbank). Always free events with the best seats at concerts, hockey and football games. doing commercials with celebrities, etc. Was awesome!

I have to say that the foodbank was probably one of the best run organizations I have ever seen, and probably the most honest and beneficial to the public.
