Yeah.... sounds awesome. But $80 minimum to get past the limited number of taxi licenses issued?

The $5 this weekend is because it's just a trial and the money is being donated to the Calgary Foundation.
Was an article in the Herald today about the $80 minimum restriction that city hall would need to change in order for Uber to be allowed to operate in Calgary in competition with cabs. Which I hope gets changed. Here is the article http://www.calgaryherald.com/busines...994/story.html
It wont get changed.
I dunno how the limited license monopoly has been allowed to exist this long and fuck over not only cabbies, but consumers.
So for them to suddenly change the policy just cause some foreign corporation wants a cut of the cash seems VERY unlikely.
Hmm, so was browsing and noticed Uber has this on their twitter feed:

Did a quick search and this seemed like a good thread to post it in. so: /bump

Gone up about a thousand since I signed it. Not holding my breath for a petition to mean anything though.Originally posted by Gart

I used Uber almost daily when I lived in Toronto. Many city cabbies that drove for private companies were also on Uber.
Super convenient for several reasons:
- It tracks cabs as they approach your location
- You could walk toward your destination as you wait for your cab as the app tracks your location and sends it to the incoming cab
- Identifies who your cabbie is and you can leave bad reviews for them if they ditch you to pick up a different fare
- Automatic account billing so I never had to pull out any cash/card/tip
- Electronic receipts
I really hope it takes off here in Calgary. I would use it exclusively rather than going through the #taxi or the godawful dispatcher system.
Does anyone even use that shitty #taxi service!? What a rip off that isOriginally posted by suen17

so... saw this on FB... guess uber is actually coming soon then?
They should sell pens from their cars for $40, and you get a free car ride.
a year later does anyone use this as a passenger ? or as a driver? are you making good money?
Is it active in Calgary yet?
Awesome idea, and possible a fun way to spend a friday night, driving around drunk folks.

I'm curious as to how this is going to pan out from an insurance angle. Specifically, the insurance on regular private passenger vehicles that Johnny Average holds would be completely null & void for activity like this. It seems like this service depends on regular people signing up to be drivers.

Also, if a private passenger auto is used occasionally for work, and you are paid mileage, how's that treated on your insurance policy?

I think you're supposed to have 2 million liability for that.Originally posted by ExtraSlow

I know in the states they have some sort of commercial coverage that covers the drivers and their vehicles.Originally posted by Masked Bandit

From the insurance company's perspective, it's not the simple exchange of money per se that is the aggravating factor, it's the idea that when you're paid a fee for delivering people or products, you're more inclined to accomplish that task sooner rather than later. Hurrying while driving increases the risk of a collision, hence increasing the risk to the insurance company.Originally posted by 01RedDX
I think they should get with the times and offer an intermediate policy somewhere between regular coverage and full commercial/livery insurance.
This is no different than carpooling, where there may be an implicit exchange of either money or goods for the service as well.
Email me for discussion. This is a bit of a grey area and my off the record thoughts on the topic are a benefit for clients, not the general public.Originally posted by ExtraSlow

The liability limit has nothing to do with it.Originally posted by J-D
