Same thing with Calgary cab vs tappcar. Went to dinner thru Calgary cab, cost was $34. Came home with tappcar was $35. Both tip included. Interesting that tappcar has a tech fee of $2.15 on the bill. Not sure what that's about.

In Cali right now, Uber, the real one not the watered down version we're getting is absolutely awesome down here.

Don't they have like 3 levels of uber?

Like possible other passengers pickups along the way - cheapest.

    Normal Uber

And like an Uber VIP? Where you get luxury sedans/suvs etc...?

I'm pretty sure I posted my experience last year with Uber, but the price difference between the cab and Uber was pretty negligible. The biggest difference ended up being the tip, where Uber didn't take one.

Depends on the country or state too though, in Europe I noticed it all depended on if the taxi drivers were protesting or not at the time. Like in Holland they only had Uber Black and nothing else, France only had UberX and XL at the time.

Whether it's Airbnb or Uber, it's amazing how governments roll over for international billionairs.

Not that I agree with our taxi cartel mind you, but it is funny it took a billionaire multinational to break it up.

Having said that, we were in Washington yesterday, and all the Uber cars also had Lyft stickers.

Was in LA and took Uber. Typical costs for travel was $0.80us to $0.92us per km.

Wonder what it'll be in Calgary?

    Isn't a cab about $1.45/km in Calgary?

Well looks like the taxi commission approved the changes which council will vote on soon.........but the new 220 plates that they also approved will need to be sent out/auctioned and the cars on the road before transportation networks can start up. They said 90 days on CBC, so of course not for christmas time when it would be very helpful.

What other industry is allowed to put so many obstacles in the way of competition? Council should be giving the people of Calgary what they want and not buckling under pressure from taxi operators that are clearly worried about a superior business model threatening their monopoly. UBER for Calgary :-)

Uber in Miami was .85usd per mile so .72cad per km or about half a taxi

They are buckling under pressure because it they try and screw cabs over they will likely lose a huge voter base (I. E. 50% of the NE)

At the same time Monday, council also voted to release 222 more taxi plates to augment the city's existing fleet of 1,659 licensed taxis.
Is there enough room at the airport to house 222 more taxis? It's pretty full.

The real question is, what's the airport going to do with Uber showing up to pick up customers now that the exclusive deal with Associated is not so exclusive any more.

And how fucked up is the cell phone pick up area is going to be now?

So, the 20% per trip fee that the city is charging, will this apply to taxi's as well? Or just for ride sharing operators?

I thought it was all about "fairness" so if Uber is getting dinged 20%, the paki taxis should be too...

It is $0.20 per trip, not 20%

    20-cent per-trip fee.
Really looking forward to this. With the re-launch of Uber, and the recent addition of Ride Please, I really hope it will force the cabs to step up their game.

How exactly do you think the current livery car service licensing system works?

You do realize there is a bit more to running a legit taxi than painting a Prius yellow and not showering right?

    Anyhow...

Overall sounds good, city will be receiving a cut just they do with taxis so they keep that portion of the budget out of my tipps account. More cabs on the road, and the option of ride share cars on the road. Up to the industry to decide which model is more profitable to run. Only benefits for consumers so long as this truly levels the playing field (meaning goes both ways) and isn't just a ffa for Uber. If uber sucks it will inevitably fail.

On a side note I had an amazing cab experience last week. Dude got out, opened doors for me and my wife both times. Stopped the clock when we got to destination, then drove around the block to make sure he was letting us off on the correct side of the street. Quick trip too and not smelly or awkward. He got a great tip for that. I also booked it all with my Uber style checker app. A+
