Default $1M temporary gym for displaced Elbow Park students called ‘absolute insanity’

    http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/ca...238/story.html

    In her riding.

The "insanity" reference is more aptly applied to the fact that WE (the employer), can't fire the employee at any time.

Like I've said, Democracy my ass.

Why not just pay the talismen center 1/10th that to use their facilities and get bused over.

Pretty crazy that they're justifying a "temporary" gym for a set of portables.

    THIS.

Our money goes to conquered people like the French and the "natives".

Conquering people has been going on since day 1. Both the French and natives have done so.

It's Canada. Our kids work to pay for a conquered people, and those that don't work and play Xbox all day.

From what I know, they're spending 10 million to rebuild Elbow Park School and will use Eugene Coste School to accommodate students from new communities with no schools once Elbow Park School students leave. This plan doesn't make sense to me though. They should just use the 10 million dollars to build a new school in the new community and keep Elbow Park students at Eugene Coste...

It did 10 years ago haha. I still think the 10 million should be used towards a new school in a new community though.

Who cares about what it cost 10 years ago?

On another thought, you should've run for a trustee position, eh. As far as spending the $10 million on a new school versus rebuilding an old school, I am sure there's lots of stuff going on that none of us are aware of that hopefully justifies rebuilding that old school.

$1 mill for Atco trailers is nothing. Modular portable buildings are extremely expensive. A single dorm in camp is well over 100k, gymnasiums or anything over 8' tall requires significantly more.

A fold-away building would probably be more cost-effective, but those seem to be used only for reservation gyms for some reason.

IMO this is a super cheap alternative to almost anything else.

The system changed in the sense of how you build schools for people (1-6 is still elementary and 7-9 is still junior high but that doesn't mean you need to separate them as such, or so this new theory goes). The traditional school building system has showed how it becomes inefficient. Once you lose a generation in a neighbourhood you are left with rather inefficient schools. By building them k-4 and 5-9 it leaves room to add, remove and transfer classes and students as neighborhood demographics change (i.e the kids have grown up, you can now move the 5 and 6 classes to the k-4 school and the old 7-9 school is at capacity. It can also work in reverse. The idea is to build each school slightly bigger than needed to operate more efficiently as demographics shift.

It's weird, it's still in the early phases, but it is based on sound theory so don't think the system has gone completely off the rails. Its just...different.

It should but, you're right, it won't..
You'd think with all the demand for schools and the demand seeming to be more or less constant, that the government would have a scale-able cookie cutter blueprint and format for schools to cut down design and construction costs. I work for three different school divisions, and not one of the schools is ever built the same, or has any continuity in the mechanical, every school has to keep different parts on hand or fly in parts to suit their individual systems. A little bit of common spec'ing would save a lot of money.

I don't get it. The article says they already have a gym, but they'd just have to share it?

So instead of sharing the gym, they want their own?

From what I heard on CHQR yesterday:

The school next door is only at 2/3 capacity, and offered to share their gym.

That would have happened if it wasn't Redford's riding.

While it is a fairly old school, its in an important location for nearby residents, and features the most gorgeous school library I have ever seen.

I went their in Elementary and I fully believe its worth the renovation costs to see it continue operating. Havent been in that building in well over a decade though.

High River was offered the exact same thing but their school board turned it down. Them bitching about this is just more of the usual post flood nonsense to come out of there.

Maybe the PIA and CTF folks should not say it was only offered to those who live in a certain area.

I don't know the area well - but man... is it this kind of school?

“In the initial public meetings following the flood, there was a desire from parents to continue to have their students attend a separate school and not be blended with the Earl Grey students,” spokeswoman Leanne Niblock said in an email reply to Herald questions.
