Default So I bought a shitty coffee table and...

... the day I get it home it looks like shit as soon as we put a few plates on it.

The wife and I were cruising around commenting on how we needed a new coffee table, but since our wedding is this coming May we decided to see if we could get by with something fairly inexpensive until after that money-sink... err, I mean wedding... has been paid for.

So, we got this piece of shit: http://www.surplusfurniture.com/en/c...ee-table-set/.

Now, it looks pretty nice but up close you can see how the finish scratches off easily. What I'm wondering is if there is some kind of coating I could grab from Lowes or Home Depot (or whatever) to apply on top to at least keep it looking decent for the 6 months or so that we'll use it.

Is there some kind of clear coat or whatever that would do the job?

I already put this junk together and don't feel like tearing it all down to take it back, and to be honest, at $250 it's not really worth the hassle.

Get a sheet of glass cut and put it on top? Glass looks like shit quickly too, but I have a feeling your house stays cleaner than mine!

Thought about this. The challenge is that we'd have to cover the whole table since we tend to place things on the edges.

Yea, not a huge fan of glass because it chips/etc. And yes I have my staff come by every couple weeks to take care of my "mess". lol

    ^^ OH OH OH!
even better than plasti-dip, there is a liquid granite stuff that home depot and rona have. It is a 3 step epoxy thing, self leveling, and according to the staff at home depot, pretty hard to fuck up if you follow the directions.

I have seen the finished product, and it looks amazing, looks just like granite, and it is like $35 bucks or something.

It does look good, but you have to be pretty decent with epoxy to get a flawless finish, the last step is a bitch.

depends how thick you layer it... but yeah it wont look good... try running a heat gun over the surface maybe? see if it heals the marks?

Instead of spending $30 on plastidip, go buy a Lack table from Ikea and call it a day.

    or this solid wood one:

^^^ This! I don't know why Ikea stuff gets such a bad rap. Bought loads over the last 25 years. It's great value for money and usually does what it says on the tin!

Yup, cheap enough to throw away and mine had been taking the abuse over 10 years.

I keep hearing that IKEA kitchens are pretty good too considering what you pay, not sure how true that is.

x3 on Ikea. I used to scoff at the thought of decent furniture from Ikea. My whole kitchen will be Ikea, as well as the whole master ensuite. Fixtures and cabinetry. I've completely redone the master bedroom will all Ikea. Bed, Mattress, drawers, night tables. All very sturdy and affordable. When putting the furniture together I also use glue on all my joints and it makes it extremely durable.

I vote for the sheet of glass. Rounded edge, tempered glass. Easy to clean.

Yep! I still have wardrobes from there over 20 years ago and they've been moved a LOT, too (including internationally). They are beginning to fall apart now, and relegated to the garage, but that's not bad going IMO

They used to supply little sachets of wood glue, but those days are gone.

The sturdiest and cheapest, bed frame I ever owned came from Ikea, too

Or.. you could simply clean it carefully, then coat it with a clear spray on polyurethane. *shrug*.. but that might be too easy.

    http://www.homedepot.ca/product/satin/911376
Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane is a clear, hard finish that dries fast to protect and beautify interior wood surfaces such as furniture, cabinets, moldings, and doors. Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane is among the most durable of protective coatings. Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane’s long-lasting protective finish makes it ideal for use on both finished and unfinished wood

For the price, they are way better than the crap you get from Home Depot or big box home improvement places.
