Great suggestion for something temporary. We have like 5 of those Lack tables around the house which all served or still do serve temporary duty...they go on sale for $10 sometimes. Then save up for something decent.Originally posted by benyl
Instead of spending $30 on plastidip, go buy a Lack table from Ikea and call it a day.
I don't know that a clear coat of any kind is going to work. The existing finish isn't real wood, some kind of plastic veneer would be my guess. Trying to put a clear finish on plastic isn't going to work very well. I'm thinking a table cloth of some kind.

Tempered glass rounded edges and use those little clear rubbery things between the glass and surface of the coffee table.

Couldn't you just give it a light sand (600 grit) and hit it with some varnish? I used Varathane "diamond coat" or whatever they sell at home depot on an old kitchen table and it was indestructible. You could probably get away without sanding if its just getting light use for a couple years, and just do where it'll be seeing wear (on top).
Or try just buying some clear spray paint in a can.
If your furniture has a bad finish... just give it a better one!
If it at least has paper thin veneer on it then scuff it with 320 and spray another clear coat on it with a rattle can. If its just melamine then your stuck.
If you feel comfortable finishing the table yourself, go to an unpainted furniture store and get a solid wood table for $250. when you're done finishing it, it will be a $600 table.
