Default How do employers justify not giving raises?

At my company I was told I wouldn't get a raise for 4 years and that they don't do inflation raises either.

And when I do get a raise in 4 years it might be 2k or something like that.

I would change company if I had better certifications (in IT) but im still studying for those.

This is crap. Leave now while you can!! lol

I got my IT job fresh out of school, no certs (just SAIT diploma) and see regular raises and increasing bonuses. Unless you are getting paid a lot more then you can find elsewhere, get out.

It seems strange not to get an inflation-hedging raise annually but unless your role has fundamentally changed or you're somehow providing greater value in your same role than you were before I'm not sure a regular annual raise really makes sense.

My own personal experience; significant raises have only really come when my role changed significantly.

When you let someone tell you things like that, you lower your value and basically guarantee that it will happen. You need to ask how they know what your value will be in 4 years, sounds like they think you will be leaving anyways and are just using you until that happens.

I'd say im intermediate/senior level - my role has a senior something specialist in my title.

im getting paid the same that i have in all jobs since the recession. Cant seem to break 75k.

I'm coming up on 10 years experience in my field.

hrm, okay... yeah then your value probably isnt significantly increasing year after year at this point... i guess you could see if you can find what kind of salary range your job has in alberta and present that info to the powers at be for them to review the position itself if you are low

I guess it all depends on the company you work for. If I was told that I wouldn't be seeing any raises for the next 4 years I would start looking right away. I'm more than confident in my skills that I expect my role to become greater..thus deserving of more money.

Not sure how the job market is for IT, but I'm one year out of school and make more than you

If you can get a job elsewhere for more money, great.

If not, that's what you're worth

Lol.. being canadian doesn't matter. I wasn't born here either.

Maybe wait till you get your certs and then try moving on out?

I see IT Analyst type roles often. Try applying for those?

Every situation is different, but IMO, anything above desktop\service desk with that much experience should probably pay over 75k a year. I've been in the industry for around 5 years, and I get 3% for inflation every year, and I typically ask for an increase every year on top of that. (5-10%).
If you're IT department is pretty static, with no growth or projects it's probably a lot harder sell on the money front.

either you accept what they are paying you, ask for more, or you find another company willing to pay you what you think you're worth.

Yep I've seen a lot of network analyst\engineer positions lately, if you're not already on linkedin, definitely get on it.

Off the top of my head, Cenovus and Pason were both hiring.

Yep. If your company feels that's what you are worth, why would they give you a raise?

If you can't make more elsewhere, I'd say your company has done it's homework and is paying you fairly. Raises are not a right.

If you are still working there then the price must be right.

I was once told that they keep raises low so we can get one every year, regardless of how the company is doing. Except averaged out, the raises don't even meet cost of living increases so they might as well not even bother.
