Default Where to buy turntable pre-amp (locally)

My in-laws bought a new receiver while visiting from N.S., but he doesn't want to get rid of his old turntable, which doesn't have a pre-amp (it's ancient)

I can't seem to find a big-box store that has pre-amps. There's some online (Amazon and such), but he doesn't trust buying over the internet, so I'd like to find one locally for him while they're here.

Turntables almost never had a pre-amp and it was reliant on the amplifier which used "phono" plugs to be the pre-amp.

I know Meloydia on 17th has them on occasion but other than that no idea.

You don't really need a pre-amp if the turntable has RCA L/R plugs.

I'm just going off of what the Sony salesman told him (I wasn't there). I personally haven't dealt with a turntable since I was 6, so have no clue.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Uhh, no. While it uses the same RCA plugs as say a CD player, the output from the cartridge is NOT line level, hence, the need for a preamp.

Unless the amp has a PHONO input (which has a built in pre-amp), you'll need a pre amp.

That salesman is probably the same type of guy who wouldn't know how to sell you a coax to phono adapter for an Atari 2600

I even hitchhiked to the library once cuz my parents were too lazy to drive me haha. Ya, I'm a nerd.

I bought a 9v battery powered one from Source a couple years back for pretty cheap. I'd only recommend that if you want something to hold yourself over until you buy a wall powered one...found one of those on eBay for I think 12 bucks and it's still going strong.
