The Canadian love affair with Israel wasn't started by Harper. It started in 1947 when Canada agreed to support the division of the British Palestine to found the State of Israel. Every subsequent Canadian PM (which have been more that 50% Liberal since that time) has been a staunch supporter or Israel. Conveniently enough, there are many Jewish communities in Canada, some of whom are quite wealthy (B'Nai Brith, etc). Jews in Canada have contributed greatly to the establishment and investment in this country since the start of the Dominion. Combined with this, most of the Catholic and Evangelical Christian (and a lot of the other Christian denomination) communities are usually supportive of the Israeli doctrine. There are not as many Muslim/Arab communities that have the same establishment in Canada so it makes sense to support where your money is coming from.

Don't forget about the Jesus Trap. The second coming can't happen if Jewish people aren't in control of Israel. There is a surprising number of Evangelicals who believe this and they have a lot of sway in the US and Canada. It's not the major reason for the support of Israel, but it is a reason for some and it's kind of crazy when you remember that they also believe the Jews will be cast to hell for not believing.
