Default Immigrating to Canada? Better speak English Or French

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...745308/?page=1

Applicants from ages 14 to 64 will now have to meet a language requirement in English or French, as well as a knowledge requirement in either language. Current rules apply only those aged 18 to 54, and the knowledge requirement could be done with the help of an interpreter. Interpreters now will not be allowed.

Is there any way to begin the immigration process if you show you have intent to learn one of the languages? Declining from the get-go I'm kind of torn about since some might be coming from countries where there aren't many resources for learning another language.

Other than that, I'm on board.

Edit: NVM I actually read the article now This is for citizenship. I support it

I can say I totally agree with this.. but will it happen?

If you want to reside in our country then you should be able to clearly speak and understand our languages.

I'm sure someone will start a class action against it.

This doesn't help much. These people should have to pass the English/French test before entering the country, not before becoming a citizen. I know tons of people's parents who have lived her 10+ years and aren't citizens...

Totally agree. Im sick of seeing people that have been here for like 5-20 years, and have BARELY learned to speak any english. Dont want to learn the language in our country? Please just stay in yours.

I remember once i went to buy kids toys from kijiji, and it was a couple of a race i will leave undisclosed. Bottom line? Their 8 year old daughter was translating for them because they spoke NO english.

    It is kind of racist.

The US, they prefer Spanish (of course the US was colonized by the Spaniards first)

In Canada we tend to place heavier weighting on French instead of Spanish (which is what half of California is now) So it will limit the movement of Spanglish Mexicans illegals in California from becoming illegals in Canada. Which IMO, is a good thing. But it will also limit other nations who do not have citizens with greater than $100,000 US debt per head on them.

Would I have a mute penniless Tibetan monk over a Spanish speaking only Californian that owes half a million US on an upsidedown house? Absolutely. Is a Bangledeshi factory worker with a nickel in his pocket worth more than a Spanglish Californian that relies on SNAP to maintain a morbidly obese body weight - You betcha.

I'm fine with it as long as english people are not allowed to immigrate without paying full restitution (and and all outstanding debts) to their home country first. IE: No British people with million dollar bankruptcy debts AKA, I would deny Donald Trump for Canadian citizenship in a heartbeat.

Its not racist at all, Its a language requirement not a skin color or ethnicity requirment.
My old roommate from the UK had to take an English test for his citizenship and this was a couple years ago... I thought this was already a stipulation.

I propose that we fast track anyone that can speak 22 languages fluently, and is willing to work for $0.14 per hour.

When I applied in 96 the paperwork was simple...read ,write and speak either English or French or don't apply.
It was 3 points each for the above and without a full 9 points in that section it was an automatic fail.

Perhaps someone can help me understand this but when you want to travel and 'explore' the world, primary goal is to experience other cultures and hopefully open your mind in the process. There are many countries e.g. India where several languages are spoken with no impact to your daily life.

Most western countries beat the drum of tolerance and freedom, yet something as simple as a different language makes it into these requirements...

If a guy is making a living and paying taxes, what's the problem?
