    Default TurboTax

    hey guys,

has anybody here used turbotax before for filing their income tax?

i've always had my accountant friend to do my returns, but i'd really like to do it myself. i'm a total noob at filing, but my returns should be pretty straight forward.

can anybody give me feedback on using turbotax for basic returns?

    thanks!

Pretty easy just follow the guide, do you have anything complicated?

You could also try studio tax, its free and basically the exact same.

lol i don't know what else, if any, that i can claim.

i might do studio tax in parallel to make sure i didn't screw up.

Ya you pretty much can't screw it up unless you type the wrong numbers. It goes through step by step and asks you what items you have.

I am going to try studio tax this year but have always used turbo tax before.

Don't bother paying for software. Lots of free alternatives out there that work.

I used this one last year and it worked just fine for simple stuff.

I only use Turbotax because my old man does contract work from home. Lots of deductions and other small business stuff. When he buys it, he gets like 10 returns, so I use it free. Works great for the most part. But for simple returns, I'd probably go free option.

Turbo Tax. Makes it super easy and prepares the digital file for easy submission to Revenue agency.
You can get turbo tax free if you look in the darker corners of the internet.

You can find Turbotax from other 'vessels' which can be submitted with no issues.

With one T4 and RRSPs - def do it yourself.

    Takes an hour, if that.

Why bother? Your just putting stuff at risk from those "vessels".

If it's a simple return, and you're just entering your T-slips and RSP receipts, studio tax works great.

If you have something more complicated like investment income, capital gains, business expenses... then look at turbo tax.

I used both one year for the hell of it. I had a lot of business write-offs, and capital gains that year.. turbo tax gave me a higher refund on my return for some reason

This. I tried using StudioTax when it first came out and my returns were very different, with TurboTax being much higher. I submitted with TurboTax and got back exactly what TurboTax said I would, so I guess something was wrong. I quadripple checked all the numbers on both but TurboTax was the one that ended up being correct, so I stuck with it since. I file electronically and get money directly deposited within a week or two.

TurboTax can be had for free as people have mentioned it, and efiling works with it no problem.

Seems like the government does some simple checks to make sure your numbers add up but does nothing to maximize your return. They are here to make money remember.

Unless you get audited then they typically just give you what you ask for. *From my limited experience anyway/.
