Any reason not to use a free product like Studio Tax over TurboTax?
No issue either way, I have used Turbotax before and liked the software. I have no issues paying if its a good product, but I similarly don't have issues with a free product if its decent.

I am just not clear what the premier versus standard actually buys me.

Studio tax is the free product to use. None of your info is stored by studio tax making it exponentially safer than browser or login based software.

When CRA stores all your info, I think that's the weaknlink, not the tax prep software.

Maybe it's just me but I would consider any private company a weaker link than CRA for storing information. I imagine they have very strict security/controls on data, much more than a private company would.

Again just my guess based on many years of working with private companies and seeing how data is stored/secured. Maybe someone who has dealt with CRA IT security has some real firsthand info.

I have very little faith in the competence of our public institutions.

Lol you haven’t done much reading of the history of the CRA before have you?

End of the day I don’t bother myself with problems I have no control over. If someone really wanted my info I am sure there are easier ways to get it than hacking turbotax

Nope, can't say that i have ever heard of any significant data breaches with the CRA in their history. Got any info? i'm curious now.

What i have heard of are many data breaches from private companies... Equifax, Home Depot, Target, etc.

anyways i agree with your last point. I use Ufile and my entire tax history is online in their cloud. If they get hacked then whatever, i'll deal with it.

The only thing that makes me slightly worried is my password manager getting hacked. That would be a killer for me, and a lot of other people i assume.

Even though Studiotax is free, I find Turbotax way more intuitive and I trust it more. I guess if someone really wanted, you could put all the info into Turbotax online and just make sure the refund is the same as Studiotax.

Did that once.. made no difference.

Turbotax is like "here let me hold your hand grandma" while Studiotax is more "lets hope grandma doesn't break a hip"

Its not just where the data is stored but also who owns it and who has access to it. Some of the other free softwares could try to claim they own the data once you enter it, or sell that information to 3rd parties.

I understand the desire to stick to the software used in the prior year for the rollover of personal information, but SimpleTax is one of the most user-friendly interfaces, so it's worth considering. No one that I've spoken with who migrated to this platform has suggested that it wasn't worth the time.

The Heartbleed in 2014 was a pretty big deal.

    Has anyone used simpletax.ca?

I see StudioTax is available for the 2020 tax year. Thinking of doing my taxes myself this year once I get all my paperwork in order.

I've used simpletax for many years. Just autofill from cra, fill in extra stuff and seems to work pretty well.

Studio tax is good because they dont take and own /sell your private information and the information is only on your pc, not on some random server.

Use simple tax every year for the past 6, or so. Works well.
