Facebook is buying mobile messaging service WhatsApp for $19 billion in cash and stock, by far the company's largest acquisition and bigger than any that Google, Microsoft or Apple have ever done.

Prepare for a ton of ads I guess. Cause despite whatsapp being a 'pay service', whenever the trial time is up, it just renews automatically for me, and I've had it a few years now.

Is anyone still running Facebook on their Android phone? If so did you ever read and look at the permissions you have given the phone? You like reading your text messages, looking at your calendar schedule etc?

Silicon Valley is becoming quite the boys club. Seems to me there are several Trillion to several tens of Trillions of dollars of "investment" money sanctioned by the US government sitting there that is not for military hardware...

They are just numbers afterall. If WhatsApp is worth $19 Billion, I'm pretty sure a barrel of oil should be about $800, just saying..

The app is great for when your away from home and want to keep in touch with friends.. fuck whatsapp is the only thing keeping my sane in Europe for the last year

Yeah, skype is rock solid, its very popular in our business circle.

Anyway, besides the fact that everyone uses whatsapp I'm actually not a fan of it. IMO Hangouts has the best features.

I speculate FB will trend down and now perhaps take Whatsapp with it.

Actually, Microsoft (eventually) killed their own in house MSN Messenger with the Skype acquisition. Skype is much larger thanks to all of MSN Messenger accounts forcibly moving onto Skype. The Skype technology and interface has been relatively left alone, while all of us old MSN'ers had to suffer by the forced migration to Skype.

Personally I think WhatsApp is a POS and I don't see why anyone would use it over BBM now that its available on all platforms. Well except Windows but that doesn't count.

i will probably have to sign in with a facebook account to use my beloved WhatsApp account.

I hate facebook and haven't had it for 7 years. It pisses me off that I can't sign into /join a lot of stuff without signing into facebook.

Youtube's account merger with Google, and the forced usage of Google+ really pissed me off. I have noticed that they've gotten rid of the Google+ requirement now...

I really like how they've allowed usage of commercial music by disabling your ad revenue and redirecting it directly to the publishers, and still allow you to use their music. Really fair use IMO.

So yea, with Google buying Youtube, it's been mostly good and very little bad.
