I've looked at Alligant a few times, and I just can't make it make sense.
5 hours each way is easily a couple hundred bucks in gas.
I value my leisure time at $50/ hour, so that's worth $500 right there.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

Depends what you drive I guess. According to gasbuddy.com it would cost me under $100 round trip, but I would be driving a Honda Civic. Taking a truck down is a whole other story though.

They are also direct flights with these guys. Dealing with the airlines available in Calgary your going to pay a premium for a direct flight. You could end up dealing with over 5 hours of wasted time at airports.

Keep in mind the actual cost of your time though. Fly from Calgary I can probably have an extra day of vacation because I'm not driving 10+ hours on top. Plus a potential hotel room depending on the time of your flight

Allegiant Air from Great Falls for LV or LA is for those with time and no money! LOL!

It's probably a more worthwhile stint if you travel with 4 people as that would allow the ability to split the cost of fuel and the driving effort. Depending on the border, it may be faster this way than going through all the security checks at both YYC and LAS or LAX.

If you also live in the deep south of Calgary, that's also a 45 min to the airport that could be utilized to go to Great Falls.

Lots of factors here that will make the effort worthwhile or not. LOL! Get a speeding ticket or traffic infraction and that could wipe out any potential savings!

I'd rather pay $200 more, and fly direct from YYC on WJ?
(Below just example, other dates available too)

Even if you value your time at $20/hour worth, 10 hours driving is $200 (so you already at $190+$200=$390)?

That's not including gas and/or baggage fees (on Allegiant) either...

*Edit: OP I realize your in Lethbridge. Basically my above point would be referring to people considering this option from Calgary.

I thought about doing this but ended up scratching the idea. I added gas, seat selection, and baggage and only really came up a couple hundred less.

For such little savings I would rather fly WJ

Multiply that by 4-6 people in an SUV and you might see why people do it.

That said, 5 hours from Great Falls to Calgary is a long stretch. However being in Winnipeg and only 2 hours to Grand Forks (3 to Fargo) makes it a really popular option for Winnipeggers.

I know my relatives in the Vancouver area frequently hop the border to fly as its a ton cheaper for them as well and only ~2 hour drive for them.

Sure you split the gas costs if you have more people, but you have to multiply the time you've wasted.
Maybe this makes sense for university students or something, but my time is pretty precious to me.

Got to agree with Extraslow. 5 hours isn't worth it. I might consider it if I lived in Lethbridge or south of there, but Calgary is too far, especially when you're on vacation.

I grew up living five hours from the airport in Nova Scotia so pretty use to long drive. Me personally it would likely be worth the hassle because money isn't super plentiful. (Two young kids, wife and myself started new careers in the past year, moving expenses, etc) But when I'm finished my trade Id deff opt for the pay more convenience.
