You have to be within a certain distance to detect the signal.

It's also a 777. And normally I wouldn't be splitting hairs, but we're talking about a far, far larger plane than a 747. About double the length, I believe.

Far from bomb proof. I damaged one dropping it two feet onto concrete. The beacon is also pretty fragile. Its only protection is its located in the "safest" part of the aircraft during a conventional crash, and has heat protection.

There's been a lot of "apparently" thrown around. I'll believe it when I see it.

and it's southwest of where the transponder stopped transmitting...not east which is where they were looking.

    A 747 is bigger than a 777. Did you mean 737?

(CNN) -- A Chinese satellite looking into the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 "observed a suspected crash area at sea," a Chinese government agency said -- a potentially pivotal lead into what has been a frustrating search for the Boeing 777.

China's State Administration for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense announced the discovery, including images of what it said were "three suspected floating objects and their sizes." The objects aren't small at 13 by 18 meters (43 by 59 feet), 14 by 19 meters and 24 by 22 meters.

The images were captured on March 9 -- which was the day after the plane went missing -- but weren't released until Wednesday.

I'd like to think if the Chinese government is making the announcement then it's at least something of value, I'm sure they have quite a few people scouring over their surveillance satellite material.

An IT manager in Chicago was allocated a piece of the grid on Tomnod and spotted something as well:

Well, snap - I stand corrected. Looks like every 7X7 series is bigger than the other - except for the 747.

    My bad entirely.

Depends on generation. 737-100 to -400 is smaller than a 727, -500 to -900 is bigger.

If the oil rig worker witnessed it going down why would there be no distress signals sent from the plane??

They aren't built on order of size, but on chronological order. Except the 717. Which was an MD-95, really.
