    Default goin LA, need advice...

Hi I'm goin LA on Oct 18 evening and returning on Oct 20 afternoon to Calgary. I will be going with 2 friends and it is technically our first time going to LA. We got a hotel on Wilshire and Western as we are all Koreans. What is there to do/see in LA? For sightseeing/shopping we technically only have Saturday morning/afternoon so I was hoping I can get some insight here. Anything I should worry about (crime etc)? What transportation methods should I use? My friend told me that public transportation is very dirty and possibly dangerous at night so I'm not so sure how I should be getting around (walking, cabbing etc)

Everything is closed at the moment with the government shutdown.. if it keeps going you might just miss a lot of stuff.

this is a good recommendation. Santa Monica and Venice beach are incredible though.

With such little time, you want to be driving as little as possible LA traffic will destroy you. Don't take public transportation, waste of time, rent a car they are cheap and absolutely worth it.

Stick to the main areas and you don't have to worry about crime etc.

Rent a car and go to universal studios, the beach, and some outlet malls if you would like. Universal studios is great in LA. I have been to LA and Orlando one, and LA is by far the much much better one.

I'd go to the J. Paul Getty Museum, otherwise rent a car and drive to Compton, ask around for directions on what to see and do. Why are you going to LA if you are so afraid of venturing out past the hotel lobby?

Universal in LA *may* have been better than Orlando before Islands of Adventure opened but now you can't even compare the two, hands down Orlando Universal is superior in every way.

I was disappointed when we went to LA few years ago, Disneyland/California Adventures is better value than Universal in my opinion.

    - Grove (shopping) and Farmer's Market (food - lunch/dinner)
    - Santa Monica and Venice Beaches
    - Getty Center

Get a rental car, for a couple days and between the group of you, usually pretty cheap.

    BUMP!

Going to be there in July, has anyone been there lately with kids? Still trying to decide where to stay in LA. We have a hotel booked in Anaheim for a week but we have another 3 nights without a place to stay. So any suggestions for a hotel that is central to all the touristy things to do in LA?
