Default SW Ring Road, Only $5 billion haha

So this has been in the news yesterday, that the final SW portion of the ring road is going to cost a staggering 5 billion bucks.

    http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/ca...198/story.html

    From the article:

Calgary’s ring road so far: $1.9B

    N.W.: $450M, 17 km (open fully 2009)

    S.E.: $769M, 21 km (open 2013)

    N.E.: $650M, 25 km (open 09)

    Unfinished S.W.: $5B, 41km (open 20??)
How the fuck is it that expensive? Did a little digging, along with this little graphic of the plans:

66 bridges and 20 interchanges, is it just me or is this crazy overkill? Does anyone know where we can find better plans that details out this $5b cost? And seriously, 66 bridges? Is there that much water out west?

The bridge system over Elbow alone should be a huge part of the budget I bet.

Bridges + Environmental protection work since it is a sensitive area = $$$
I am not sure if I would call NW finished with them building half the lanes and bridges required....

isnt a large chunk going to first nations too?

but why do they need a new bridge over fish creek? i thought 37th was designed with the ring road in mind?

They are probably putting new bridges in to straighten it out closer to the 37th street along the farm land to the south.

That Stoney/Sarcee/Glenmore/Highway 8 interchange near Westhills is probably going to be the biggest interchange in the city. I don't have a link to the drawing at the moment, but it looks fricken crazy.

New bridge over the bow would probably cost a good chunk too.

Christine Way said the “preliminary estimate” of $5 billion includes the $340.7-million land deal with Tsuu T’ina, connector roads, a public-private partnership deal and 41-kilometres of road across the Elbow River and Fish Creek.

$8 billion gets you an oilsands plant, $5 billion gets you a 1/4 of a ring road?

A topological map is all one needs to understand the cost of this portion of the project.

The other three sections of the ring road were basically built on flat farmers fields and used an existing bridge over the Bow in the south.

    a) $8B might get you part of/most of an oilsands plant, but probably not in it's entirety.

    b) having said that, comparison to the oil construction industry is an interesting perspective. It costs a fuck load more to build anything in Ft Mac than it could ever cost in Calgary, so how on earth do they get to $5B?

KID (KEARL Initial Development) was projected to be $8 billion dollars... its now well over $12billion due to colossal oopsies and people not knowing what they are doing. Either way, we're talking about a plant that can run for 50+ years in the middle of nowhere and the massive undertaking of having 7000+ people at any one time building it for years upon years... and that versus a god damn road.
