    Default Weird debate question...

Hi, this is a silly question. But we were talking about time line here and was having a little discussion.

If someone said before June. Would you takes this as done before the start of June or would that be inclusive of June till the end of the month?

    Thanks for your input

I would take it as done before june. If it was inclusive of June the time line would be by the end of june, I would think.

I'm a contractor, so my opinion is inclusive all of June. Lol. Which should be better worded IMO, "before the month of June ends"

Should really do a poll tho Ken.

For that specific sentence, May 31.

+1 'by June' means May 31.

Otherwise it would be 'before the end of June'.

    Before June 1st.

Otherwise you'd say "Before end of June"

Depends on the context in a way..

Say If you had a car getting work done, or a house being built.. something longer term and someone said 'when will you have it back/done?' And you say 'Should be done by june'... That could mean sometime in june typically..

But if you were the guy doing the work, and told me you'd 'have it ready by june'... Then I'd expect by june 1st.

Well is any date (June 3, 15 etc) within June considered 'before' June? No they are not. So before should not include June dates.

If it was to be done by June, Id assume the very start of June, otherwise if its DURING June, then it may as well be the end of it, so July 1st.

You think? Let's reduce the timing. "It'll be done by four o'clock" doesn't mean it will be done by 4:59 or 5:00... it means it will be done by 4:00.

And as such, saying something will be done by June means it will be done before June. Not before July.

What a stupid question. Before June means "before the start of June." Anyone who argues otherwise needs to go learn English. If I were a landlord, I'd have to cash that rent cheque before the idiot tenant spends all the money, not while or after he's spending/spent the money.

How could anyone think that "before June" meant during or till the end of June?

    Seriously?

Before June definitely.. But I'll argue the 'by june' example I gave. And I don't mean a car getting worked on for a week. I mean one getting built over months, or a house as mentioned.

When do you expect to have it? 'ahhh, by june?' Leaves it open to within the month in my mind.. But yes, saying 'before June', does mean before the first of june.

This only works in a long term scenario though. The shorter you make it, the more precise you're expected to be.

You added the word "should" and changed the argument.

By beginning with "should", now means, "I don't know when it will be done".

Thanks for proving my point. I had to word it in a unbiased way.
Agreed that if someone wants it at the end of June, then it should be worded before July or by the end of June.

    Agreed, although not initially.

I had to think in how I spoke in the past with friends or in a work setting. If I told someone that "I should have it done by June" it meant that I would have it ready sometime in June.

While I understand that taking it at it's literal written context it would mean I would have it ready by June 1st, I meant that it would be ready "sometime in June".

But this would be if June was more than a few months away.

If we changed the wording a bit and shortened the time frame and instead said "I will have it ready by Friday", I am saying that you will have it no later than Friday, and not the next day.

I think that as we predict a time frame further out, we like to generalize more, and our context gets a bit more broad.
