Default Review - Industrial Elements (furnishings, accessories)

I am not writing this because the Business is owned by another beyonder. Nor am I writing this to get brownie points or part thereof. I am writing this for I have just had an amazing product purchasing experience that I need to share.

You see, I had been in the dining table market for the last few weeks following a move to a larger space. Being a person that has to look for something ad nauseum before I make a decision on what to buy (it’s a zodiac sign thing, deal with it,) I had been scouring this entire city and online stores looking for that one table that satisfied all my needs: size, design, quality, and of course price. A solid wood table with some natural elements in it (think live edge, reclaimed wood etc.) at the right size was a style I had decided on. The whole reclaimed anything look is all the rage now, and you can imagine how much of it of varying grade is out there.

I have had furniture sales people run after, swarm and sweet talk me almost everyday for the last couple of weeks and I’m feeling quite vulnerable; and there are stores I have vowed not to return to. In all this excitement (if you want to call it that,) there was one star that stood out for what it had, for what it offered: enter Industrial Elements.

I had gone to visit Industrial Elements earlier during my search upon hearing about them through a friend. I had mentioned what sort of product I was looking for and they had just been to the store during opening week (at the Core in downtown, third level) and were in awe. Rightfully so, as the day that I had visited, while the store was only half stocked, I wanted to touch, feel and take every item they had.

Industrial Elements is a store that carries products that are put together from reclaimed material: wood, railroad and machinery metal, tools including large wrenches etc. Every piece appears to have a story behind it in terms of where its parts came from, sometimes with the level of detail that leave you wondering “how’d they ever think that!” What’s unique about their products is that thought has been put into ensuring durability and strength: think heavy, solid, sturdy items that are functional (you will never look at that tripod light at HomeSense the same way again.)

Having been to various “chain” stores around town that may be considered the creme de la creme in terms of quality and design (think Restoration Hardware, Crate and Barrel if you will) as well as other stores that source furniture from what seems like the same handful of manufacturers (Revolve, Bay, Bondars, Home Evolution,) as unique and stylish their products were, I could not help but think one thing: those products reek mass manufacturing, they lacked the uniqueness that I was looking for. Industrial Elements brings to Calgary what never existed before, a store that carries products that are of limited edition _without_ the collector item prices that one would expect. The products are competitively priced and carry all the elements and traits that I mentioned above (believe me, I have shopped around $ wise as well including through DirectBuy!)

I returned to Industrial Elements this past Saturday for I had seen a table I liked the first time I was there, and was pleasantly surprised to see how the store was now fully stocked having received a new shipment of items. Industrial lighting, accessories and amazing stools and chairs were part of the latest shipment with each item so unique that I felt the need to examine and feel many of them. In terms of accessories (when it comes to furniture I want it all to myself,) I was thinking what piece I would buy for whom (thinking birthdays, father’s day, graduations etc,) for they were affordable but unique treasures that would be forever cherished by the recipient: periscopes, a compass made with amazing material and precision that would elegantly accessorize any office or man cave. Heck I want that compass for myself now (I’ll admit I saw a kid admire the table top compass, I wanted to see it. Kid goes away with his family, but returns to get his father to buy it for him while I had the item in my hand; kid was enthralled by it and I had to put it back down for him.)

I will leave it to Christian, the owner, to explain to you how he and his wife came into this business idea. I cannot describe in written words the passion that he exudes towards the business and the products themselves. A zero pressure, totally chill conversation led to me purchasing that table (lucky for me it was still there,) a product that I could no longer walk away from. There was no order to place, no manufacturing time to negotiate. I was stunned to hear Christian offer a next day delivery (where he himself was one of the two awesome men carrying it into my home!) Today I am the proud owner of a piece that will remain in my possession for a long time.

The truth is, the products at Industrial Elements sell themselves. You’ll have zero pressure to buy any piece, but at the very least, will leave with inspiration for design ideas that take you beyond what you have been able to see in Calgary in recent times. Pictures on its website don’t do the products justice, go down to the store and experience what Industrial Elements has on offer.

As a beyonder, you have until March 31st the ability to get a 10% discount and free delivery per Christian’s post on Beyond (see link below.) If any item catches your eye, do ask yourself whether or not you want to let it go, for it may not be there the next time you go around.

Sometime I will have to come check this place out. We get calls for this sort of stuff from our commercial clients from time to time.

Agreed, in their early days Christian helped me with numerous RFI's for a boardroom table. Ultimately our design theme changed and the style was no longer appropriate but he was quite accommodating along the way.

BTW - That metal naked chick is awesome!

I like to stop in on my lunch break every once in awhile. I really like their stuff, just haven't figured out how I could get some of the furniture to fit in my place.

I just picked up a piece today for my wedding anniversary. Hope she likes it.

Having said that props to Christian who was very quick to help out and answer any questions. Oh and thumbs up for the beyond discount to boot.

P.s I want that Wall-E that you have in the store right now. Lol
