    Default Historical Calgary pictures

Stumbled upon these at the Alberta On Record web site - lots of historical pictures here, some 5000 of Calgary alone...

1955: 10th Street and 16th Avenue NW looking north up 10th Street.
So much stuff to run into in that intersection back then (link)...

1955: Cloverleaf at 14th Avenue and 14th Street NW - looking NW at
North Hill Mall. Wow, things have changed at that intersection (link)...

Will post more up in the future.

1948: Confederation Park fort before Confederation Park actually existed.
Playground equipment like that could never exist in today's playgrounds.
Suspect this is south of the creek on the west side of 10th St. (link)...

Couple of old movie drive-ins - the one in the upper picture is the old Sunset Drive-in where the new Centre Street Church was built. The drive-in in the second picture below has me baffled - north of Memorial Drive and east of Barlow Trail NE. Don't know what that one was called - anyone have an idea? Both aerial pictures were from 1970.

Looking NE at North Hill Shopping Centre, one can see a huge water tower
that used to exist just to the north of King George Elementary School (link)...

Actually North Hill has changed quite a bit over the years. The theatre and bowling alley are gone. What used to be a Loblaws (eventually Super Valu) at the southwest end was bulldozed long ago. Safeway used to be at the east end near Sears in the 80's and is now at the west end in a newer addition. Also added recently - the Renaissance condominiums. Even the interior underwent some big changes over the years - this was, in it's beginning, an exterior strip mall, the enclosed section was added in the early 70's..

haha I was only kidding. The condos were a big change. I am not sure if I am old enough to remember the other changes though.

Me as well, thanks for all the "before/after" photos guys!

I just moved to East Village so I have really enjoyed seeing what the area looked like from 100 years ago to today. Essentially EV was the beginning areas of the city.

Any of you guys know of good books on the history of Calgary?

Really, it is kind of amazing to see how the city is evollving even in such a short time.

How many can remember the ESSO that used to be on the SE corner of 16th Ave and 10th St NW or the A&W that used to be directly south of Tuxedo Source for Sports on Centre Street. Buildings come and go - I remember there being a large swedish/euorpean furniture store east of where Foster's funeral home is on 4th St NW. Can't remember the name of that store but it's been long gone and replaced by all those condos behind the funeral home.
    Will fuck off, again.

I still remember when the earls on macleod trail by anderson station was a Texaco gas station. When you stop and think about it, this city has changed SO much in short period of time. Kind of sad in a way but also a testament to the infrastructure of our city. I take the C train to work every day and its sad to see the buildings all run down between 1st and 4 street on the transit line. Old classic original buildings now full of pawn shops and grungy places. On a few of them you can still see the original store names and writing on them if you look carefully. Once proud, clean business are now shitty run down stores.

i remember these hot fire units as a kid..

Oh no, its still there. Same with the other church right beside it, although that one is completely boarded up.
Since people are buried there, they cant tear either of them down, which is quite a shame. The white one in the pic is still occasionally opened up for the odd wedding in the summer, but thats it. Just further south of it are these two run down buildings, one says "Watson Machine shop" on top of the sliding shop doors, although its quite faint now as that building is older then the hills pretty much.

Yeah Calgary has changed unbelievably so. I remember when Sundance was just being built, and I thought that was "Super far south".... now Sundance is almost inner city lol. Everytime I take Deerfoot south of the city, Im awestruck at all the new construction.

I do! It was still there when I moved to Calgary 14+ years ago... and there was a Great Canadian bagel where the Starbucks is now... and wasn't Mr. Sub right across 16th from Esso...?

There was an Esso on the NE corner of Centre & 64 Ave too...

Turbo gas station on Shag & Varsity Dr...

All sorts of stuff. That city has changed so much... and I didn't even grow up there! A lot of changes in the 10 years I lived there... it's unreal.

Okay. Here's an oldie for all of you - how many remember coming into the south end of Calgary on highway 2 when the highway was lined with huge poplars. Remnants of them are still visible behind the Home Depot in Shawnessy and further south of Stoney Trail (22X).

Anyhow, does anyone know the name of the Swedish/European furnishing place I was speaking about earlier or is that too old for most - it probably disappeared 25-30 years ago.
