Update: Wife was to call a phone number listed on the summons to ensure she's required tomorrow for selection. She called. It's proceeding and she's required to attend for the selection process.

I really hope she gets selected!! Will update tomorrow.

I couldn’t imagine how lame your day to day life would have to be to be stoked for jury duty.

I’d never want to be tried by a jury made up of people with nothing better to do with their time or not smart enough to get out of it.

I would think that is exactly who you would want to be tried by, especially if you were guilty. Way better chance of snowing idiots than a judge!

Isn’t everyone’s day to day life pretty lame right now tho?

There’s probably a lot of people using COVID to get out of it. I wanna see where this goes tho.

I’d kill myself without my day job to entertain me.

I know a few people who have had to go to counselling after being in jury duty from what they had to witness.
All of them were women. Nightmares, paranoia, etc.

They preferentially choose women for the jury. I know equal amount of guys called for it and not one was selected.

Well, she didn't get picked. She got in there and was assigned a random number. Once they were ready to start calling people, they'd have a copy of everyones number and it was again randomized drawing. If your number got picked, walk to the front, state if you have an excuse to be absent or willing to be a part of the jury.

They had enough people so the ol' ball and chain didn't end up getting called at all. Trial is for some drug dealer who was trafficking cocaine and meth.

They are starting the trial immediately tho. Literally got their jury and are starting trial right now, today. That's not what they usually do is it? That quick? They said it would most likely last all week.

I could not imagine a bigger pain in the ass. I needed to work on my honeymoon, I'd be damned if I ever bailed on my company and shareholders over jury duty. People are not fit for that work anyway IMO. Only judges, who can be held accountable for their decision and know the law, should make a determination of guilt.

I got a summons and really don't have time to potentially sit through a long trial.

What's the best way to get out of this?

Do I attempt to go online and give a reason for exemption or should I register, attend the selection day and try and get out of it then?

I know there will be 200 people there and they only select 12, but those odds are not great (6% chance) and this would cause a lot of challenges for me at work.

Unless you already have international travel booked for during the selection period, you are fuck.
I got out of one because a refinery was in a shutdown and I was assigned 75hr/week of work for 10+ weeks "in a vital capacity pertaining to plant safety" but even that was a stretch.
Last time I got excused before I even had to show up at the Selection Site (which I think was The Big 4, LoL!)
You'll get excused once you start the process.

Spew out racist ideologies during your jury interviews. Just a guess. I've never been summoned myself.

Actually, this is a really good idea. I might get one of those and wear it on the selection day.

Fuck the defendant's dad. You should be able to get out due to conflict of interest.

Just to be safe, fuck the prosecutors' dad(s) too.

Jury interviews are an American thing. Here they get your name, age, and profession and have to reject/accept based on that.

A far as getting out of it, you can try to get excused on the initial form but you'd better have a very solid reason (already booked travel, extreme financial hardship, major health problems, are 65+, etc). If you can't get an exemption and end up in selection and get chosen, you are allowed to approach the judge and request an exemption but again, you'd better be very persuasive as judges spend all day seeing people trying to weasel their way out. I was summoned once and the judge straight blasted some folks that tried to get out of it for flimsy reasons. One guy was just under the 65 mark and tried to get let off due to old age, judge yelled "I'm older than you are, denied!"

Report back and let us know if the instruction video for jury selection is still a VHS rip featuring the cast of The Beachcombers.
