TORONTO – The parents of a 10-month-old girl said they were horrified after their wireless camera baby monitor was hacked, and the couple heard a complete stranger yelling at their sleeping baby.

Ohio mom Heather Schreck said she was asleep when she was woken up by the sound of a man’s voice, according to Fox19. She grabbed her phone to check the Foscam camera installed in her child’s room, saw the camera moving and heard a voice scream, “Wake up baby! Wake up baby!”

The baby’s father, Adam, said that when he ran to his daughter’s side, he was startled to find the camera then pointed directly at him.

“Then it screamed at me,” he said. “Some bad things, some obscenities. So I unplugged the camera.”

The couple said they realized they were “hacked from the outside” and that they will now take extra security measures to protect their monitor from hackers.

Experts say that wireless cameras like the one in the Schreck home are vulnerable to hackers and recommend having camera passwords while ensuring the equipment’s software is up to date.

Guess forums weren't satisfying this guys trolling fix anymore?
Can't believe someone would do this, but in truth I couldn't help but laugh at how absurd the whole situation is.

Serves them right. Its not ok, regardless of the application, to have a wifi network unsecured.

This would be akin to leaving your front door wide open and people yelling at your from the street.

related to the fact the the camera is accessible online (with default factory user/pass) rather than wifi? I"ve seen people scan for these types of camera setups, and all they do is type the factory logins...

It's surprising how many people think that they don't need to secure their wifi. In my neighborhood, last summer there was 16 wifi networks of various manufacture. I got tired of all the interference, so out of curiosity I saw down with my laptop in a lawn chair in my driveway, connected, logged in with default creds, and turned off the wifi on NINE of them.

There were 3 that were WEP, and the remainder were all WPA2. I left the WEP ones alone, because at least they tried...

This is correct, there's sites that just scan constantly to find random webcam streams and people can connect and see whatever to them.

Even if you're wifi is unsecured realistically they'd have to be parked within a house or two in order to "hack" your wireless. More likely the can had an internet broadcast feature on so that you can view it while not at home

I don't think this is Wifi issue. I bet this is some sort of uPNP device.

Is there a way for you to do this if I set my wifi to not broadcast SSID?
    probably harder but not impossible?

disabling SSID does almost nothing. The SSID is embedded in various other packets.

Doesn't even slow me down. The best thing you can do is to update your Router to the most current stable firmware, then put a nice long "passphrase" for the password using WPA2-PSK for your wifi. Then a different "passphrase" for router itself.

Why would you want a video camera for a baby? It's not like you're going to miss it doing something exciting.

Just about as absurd as a baby monitor with video and two way audio capabilities.

Is it really that hard to walk to where the baby is sleeping?

Just about as absurd as <insert technological advancement from the past 100 years>.

Is it really that hard to simply <insert stupid luddite comparison here>

Aaaand you know that the camera was hacked off the internet vs the localized wifi how? Either way, it's the same level of effort to simply secure the camera (account) with a passphrase.

I picked option 2. For all 3 kids. We never even had a baby monitor. Fuck sometimes I'll go into their room when it's quiet just to make sure they're breathing!
You have a couple of photos that are great... you must be very good at photoshop!
