Default US offered France nukes to use in Vietnam?

Wow, looks that way? There really is no end to the bottomless pit that is the black soul of the US government, or the people in it.

Back in high school, I wrote a position paper where I argued that the use of nuke in Japan was much less devastating than a protracted land-based invasion.

Do you even read your own articles? Or do you just skim the headlines?

In fact, Dulles was never authorised to make such an offer and there is no hard evidence that he did so. It seems possible that in the febrile atmosphere of those days the panic-stricken French may simply have misunderstood him. Or his words may have got lost in translation

Well, considering they had surrendered more or less already, the only sticky point was the emperor....

If it weren't for the A-bombs on Japan, there may be a chance I won't exist. Same goes for many Chinese.

I think it's pretty widely accepted that the use of atomic weapons caused fewer long deaths than the planned invasion of the Japanese islands by the Allied and Soviet forces.

I don't use tampon's. I use sand. Packed in nice and tight.

No, seriously though. The article suggests, accuses, and implies. But it doesn't state that it actually happened. Yet Toma is calling them all blackened soulless pit dwellers. Based on an accusation, not a fact. No proof. Just someone saying that someone else might have said something 60 years ago.

But hey, don't let minor things like evidence or reason get in the way of your witch hunt.

Somewhat o/t, but the B29 low altitude raids that were happening at least a couple nights a week would often kill more people through the ensuing firestorms started by the incendiary munitions being dropped on paper mache cities, than both nuclear weapons dropped killed combined. There are dozens of examples of nightly casualties from B29 conventional weapons that topped either Nagasaki or Hiroshima. Anyone who has read anything regarding air warfare in WW2 knows this.

Considering the fact that even in the last operations vs Japanese troops in the war, the lions share would NOT surrender even when facing impossible odds, and would try and take as many enemies with them when they killed themselves, often with grenades or other hidden explosives. Invading the home islands of Japan could and likely would have been a nightmare for all involved, with far higher casualties than from the B29 raids and the 2 weapons dropped from Bock's Car and Enola Gay.

There were likely many factors for the use of the atomic weapons on Japan, OTHER than actually anything to do with Japan and the war with them. Posturing to scare the Russians, and many other possible factors could have been likely reasons as well.

If you think the USA offering France tactical nukes is strange bedfellows, there are several excellent books and papers regarding South Africa and Israel's cooperation on a nuclear weapons program a few decades back.
