Default Living Expenses in Calgary (2018)

Came across this article today which breaks down roughly how much it costs to literally just live in Calgary. Looking at the numbers, I think it does pretty well for an essentially bare-bones situation with tweaks here and there.

    Thoughts? Reasonable or no?

    Reasonably accurate for barebones costs.

That article to me is scraping the bottom of the barrel on a poor budget with those costs.

You'd have to have a pretty busy social life to be spending $300/month too.

I'm definitely over 2x that a month granted it depends heavily on your home/car situation.

In those numbers you see no TV costs. Internet/Phone are low (minor in the big picture. No utilities? Must be assuming the car is owned so no lease/finance payments.
$60 a month per gas is super low and I'd say $291 on groceries is also very low. At $289 a month for all your eating out/entertainment/booze budget is also pretty lean in this city.

This thing also ignores simple budgets of work clothes or any maintenance in life. I understand her aiming for a barebones article but that number is definitely missing some significant components I would argue.

If this is a female budget, that's a non-factor. Free drinks with a wink.

I always find articles like this funny, and JUST had a big argument with a group of friends about cost of living and tipping waitresses now that minimum wage has gone up.

In short, you don't get to rent a complete place to yourself if you are at or around the poverty line. You get to rent a room with someone.

And this article highlights how entitled people are to feel they should be able to rent a place for themselves. A $780/month bachelor suite is a shittttttthole. And if that is all you can afford, you should really be stepping it down to renting a room for $500-$600/month until you are more financially stable. This will likely have the benefit of being in a nicer location. You're obviously poor already, so you clearly don't (or shouldn't) need much space.

I rented rooms for 5 years out of college, I also rented a 2bed/2bath condo and had a roomate but it wasn't a big condo so it was pretty similiar to renting a room.

    Anyways /rant.

The numbers are pretty accurate overall though for meeting the bare minimums. A tank of gas in a civic will last two weeks if you never leave the city and only are moving yourself around.
