With the light hail that there was in the NW today I figured we could post this thread up. The premise is simple, if there's a hail warning or if it's hailing somewhere, post up the location to warn your fellow Beyonders.

No hail on the west side of downtown so far.
I won't even take my car out if there's a risk of hail, hail claims are a pain in the ass. Happy to drive my beater everyday if I a have to.
Looking straight west from downtown, and this looks like regular rain to me. No tall cumulonimbus clouds.
I actually like hail though. had hail claims on two vehicles, and I came out ahead each time. On my current "new" truck, I would love a cash payout instead of fixing it. Wiould be a good pressure test for my new insurance provider as well. Dare to dream . . .

Minor hail in the SE about 10 min ago
No weather watches or warnings in effect.
Last year they were quick to panic at every buildup, this year they are ignoring the minor storms (a good thing).
The day I dropped off my car for 3M.
My car has never seen rain - let alone hail.

I ended up making money when we had that huge storm a few years ago, process was super simple too. Definitely in the minority on that but it was actually pretty great for me.Originally posted by Twin_Cam_Turbo

My car was outside for that. Only got rained on though luckily. Well maybe it got hailed on but there's no holes in the soft top thankfully.
2 vehicles hit in the 2012 hail storm - claims couldn't have been handled better or have been simpler. Maybe it's your insurance provider?Originally posted by Twin_Cam_Turbo

Just moved to Calgary so excuse my ignorance, but hail storms are normal during the summer months?? Bad enough to damage vehicles? I don't even have a garage for my car so this is really starting to worry me...nor do I have comprehensive insurance...
Really starting to feel like Calgary has 0 days with good weather
We will get 1-2 solid hailstorms a summer... I'd invest in a padded car cover if I were you.Originally posted by MR2-3SGTE

lol really looking forward to those days. Haven't had a single day yet where it's warm enough to comfortably wear a t-shirt. Although I'm coming from Florida so not sure if i'll ever see those days againOriginally posted by msommers

The car should be in storage for the winter so I'm really only worried about the summer months. Are the storms surprise attacks, or do we get a notice in advance?
Meaning, would I have throw on a car cover every time there's a chance of rain? Or are we able to estimate the time/day of the severe storms?
Having spent the last 35 years here in Calgary, it's been my experience that Calgary's summer storms are for the most part quite unpredictable. Now a good thing is that the government (or someone that reports to them) tries to get up into/near these summer hailstorms to seed them and hopefully reduce the size of the hail but the pounding our home and two of our vehicles took in the summer of 2012 would tell me they have a lot of work to do yet - largest hail I'd ever seen in Calgary.
Will fuck off, again.
I just hope the weather holds off till next month
Nah you didn't have anything to worry about. It was just tiny pea sized hail.Originally posted by xnvy

The insurance companies contract hail seeding aircraft to reduce the size of any hail. You will see them flying around storms - crazy guys!Originally posted by MR2-3SGTE

Weather office Canada will generally issue a storm watch, for days when the development of serious weather is likely and then issue a storm warning when there is a good chance of severe weather presently inbound to the city.
Most of the severe weather hits the NW or N of the city generally.
I pay attention to the radar as its a great indicator of whats to come - the city is huge so no storm will ever encompass the entire area.
Great. I just realized my new truck has an aluminium hood. Hail magnet!!!
