no one does anything in business if its not going to benefit them... they simply realize more money will be made if more cars are running around with their tech in them.... why? because electric cars need to be charged.... and who has a network of stations in place? hrm...

    oh and sorta repost?

Maybe it's just because I'm a pessimist (well, I like to consider myself a realist anyways), but I can't see this being done for purely philanthropic reasons.

It's better in the long run to have competition.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

So what stops China from using this tech and flood the market?

Did they use open up pattern on cars but not the charging stations?

yeah interesting to see their proposed 2015 North American/European supercharger port plans, they will essentially be like a huge monopoly for stations, no matter what the brand I bet.

edit: then watch them create massive malls and high end restaurants around their stations, super profit

I've followed Elon enough to truly believe that he does what he does because he wants to improve humanity, it just so happens that he understands how to sustain that change through effective business.

The electrification of all cars is great for humanity however keep in mind Tesla is planning on building the worlds largest battery factory, so let the chinese copycats come, they will be buying batteries from Tesla.

Thats yet another twist, Tesla will still charge other car companies to use their charging stations, they just have to abide by Tesla's model of free supercharging.

I see that's the end game. Using this to promote usages and charge for solar electricity and bring solar price down.

I think this is an awesome development.

They can either own and run the stations or franchise it out and spread the network further. Tesla is just gateway drug and he know he can't do it alone.

    +1.

From a business standpoint, humanitarian reason or not, it's a smart move.

Tesla will still benefit because they had to develop the car first then the supercharger network. Once other companies build a decent car under their technology, they'll be forced to use Tesla's built network for source until they catch up.

    I like it.

Dude it's China... Your shit gets copied regardless of whether it's patented or not.

Stumped me for a second.. but yes like Apple, and there is nothing wrong with that. Apple makes a terrific product and they're good at making money. Until a google roles around with their own electric car and obliterates Tesla's market share, Tesla is king. It's never easy paving the road but Tesla is positioning themselves to be the provider of both the energy source and the batteries, the question is really whether electric cars will catch on, which is why they are opening their patents.

But patented mean stolen stuff stays in Chinese domestic market.

Unless that Musk's idea all along. Following the Android footsteps. Once the Chinese is behind it, you will find electric car parts for cheap.

Who are these patents released to per Se? The public or other companies? But it's win win for them. It seems like a good thing to do in the general public's eye and also they get the chance to expand the electric market with the help of some big names like BMW. I remember reading that electric cars still account for close to 1% of the entire automotive market in US so this is their chance to see that number grow over the coming years.

Pretty interesting, Tesla didn't patent some of its more secretive technologies, also Tesla and BMW have confirmed they have met to collaborate:

No, it really isn't. We currently have built a centuries worth of infrastructure based around fossil fuel vehicle transportation.

Electricity infrastructure has no chance in hell of keeping up to a steady conversion rate of cars to electric.

Reason is probably to keep them secret. Patent = showing the world how it's done. Keeping it secret, like Coke, makes sure no one can duplicate it, assuming you can't reverse engineer it.

Are you saying we don't have sound electrical infrastructure?

The electrification of cars is really a good step as it leverages infrastructure that nearly EVERYONE already has. Additionally the usage is hardly a concern as the vast majority of people will be charging their cars when most people aren't using their appliances.

    From the press release...

    Words of wisdom and experience.

When I started out with my first company, Zip2, I thought patents were a good thing and worked hard to obtain them. And maybe they were good long ago, but too often these days they serve merely to stifle progress, entrench the positions of giant corporations and enrich those in the legal profession, rather than the actual inventors. After Zip2, when I realized that receiving a patent really just meant that you bought a lottery ticket to a lawsuit, I avoided them whenever possible.

At Tesla, however, we felt compelled to create patents out of concern that the big car companies would copy our technology and then use their massive manufacturing, sales and marketing power to overwhelm Tesla. We couldn’t have been more wrong. The unfortunate reality is the opposite: electric car programs (or programs for any vehicle that doesn’t burn hydrocarbons) at the major manufacturers are small to non-existent, constituting an average of far less than 1% of their total vehicle sales
