Default My faith in Canadians restored! Pierre Trudeau is number 1

    http://www.etcanada.com/blogs/etc_10...k-layton/news/

Who are Canada's most beloved heroes? Based on a new online campaign's findings, the list includes Jack Layton, Pierre Trudeau, Terry Fox, and Wayne Gretzky.

About 12,000 Canadians participated in the online campaign which began December 11, 2013 and closed last month. The research was done in anticipation of the country's 150th birthday in 2017.

The five-part digital form included the question: which Canadians have inspired you the most over the last 150 years? This top 10 list was compiled by the Canadian Heritage Department:

    1. Pierre Trudeau
    2. Terry Fox
    3. Tommy Douglas
    4. Lester B. Pearson
    5. Chris Hadfield
    6. David Suzuki
    7. Jack Layton
    8. Sir John A. Macdonald
    9. Wayne Gretzky
    10. Romeo Dallaire

Also on the questionnaire: which of Canada's accomplishments of the last 150 years make you most proud to be a Canadian? The top answer was medicare followed by peacekeeping in second place, and the 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms in third place.

So many threads about government infringing on rights and freedoms; idolizes a man who suspended those rights and freedoms for a third of the population.

    Never change.

Trudeau, Suzuki and Layton. I'm sensing a demographic here.

    Too stupid too see it.

He'll forgive the Harperites perma spying and withering away rights, versus using the act TEMPORARILY to decimate a domestic terrorist group who had been kidnapping and murdering.

No... But to hoist Trudeau as some paragon of virtue is hilarious. He advocated human rights on one hand yet suspended rights for 1/3 of Canada? Guy was a straight up hypocrite. At least we got some form of useful legislation out of him but give me Chretian any day over Trudeau. I don't think anyone from Quebec will ever be able to forgive his stupidity.

You're so inconsistent in your politics and beliefs I'm quite convinced you must be half retarded. I don't like Harper but Harper hasn't done anything nearly as bad as what Trudeau did in 1970. How you can not realise that is simply flabergasting. The asshole allowed the suspension of basic rights in Quebec. You could get arrested by the cops without a warrant or any reason whatsoever. No other PM has ever violated our Canadian constitution as badly as Trudeau did. He pretty much took a piss on the consitution. Using of the War Measures Act in peacetime? Harper doesn't have shit on dictator Trudeau.

Harper has done worse, and is trying to do worse. And wants it full time.

Does the FLQ exist? Are radical extremist groups kidnapping and murdering people? Holding for ransom? Did he abuse the temporary power, or did he use it to decimate the FLQ? Did he try and keep the power after it was done?

    Don't be a complete idiot.

Man Toma you really do troll Beyond like crazy...

Last I heard, and I'm not lying here at all... Nenshi was the greatest Canadian followed by Harper.

Maybe that was the greatest Canadian alive tho... This was all over the news a few months ago.

Why isn't Nenshi on this list!!!!!!?????

BTW, Nenshi scored his points on that poll by his response to the flood.

Of course, doesn't make it right.

Do you not realize why the government wants police to access your computer without a warrant? If it catches some pedophiles it must be worth it, right?

Suspending basic civil liberties for all people in a province because of the actions of a radical fringe group is completely inexcusable and considering a leader a hero for doing it is downright laughable.

I'm sure if Harper did the same thing for the same reasons Toma would be very vocal supporting it.

Very tough to say. UNLIKE harper, Trudeau was a peoples champion, a proponent of individual freedom, and a man of impecble integrity towards the common man. He could be trusted with such power, used it wisely, and then gave it up.

Harper is seeking similar power full time, and his motives are always questionable. He is not a man of the people, and seems like a power hungry whack job corporate sell out american lackey.

    Maybe he should for Calgary. He would clearly have Toma's support Wait, Toma hates the US and practically supports Al Qaeda in past posts... but aren't they, and I quote;

Are radical extremist groups kidnapping and murdering people? Holding for ransom?
    ?

Sounds like FLQ and Al Qaeda have a lot in common

I guess we should declare martial law because of the Hell's Angels and drug gangs then?

The War Measures Act is unacceptable during war time, never mind during peace time. Whether it's because of murderers running in the streets or people downloading Game of Thrones, what's the point of enshrining civil rights when you can just take them away with the stroke of a pen.

(BTW it was Quebec's premier and Montreal's mayor who begged Trudeau to declare martial law.)
Oh, okay then. Marital law is fine when other politicians are the ones asking for it.

Kidnapping and murder didn't prompt the desire for the war measures act, thousands of francophone students protesting did.
