IIRC, soccer is actually more popular in Canada than hockey, on a per capita participation basis.

First time I heard this my mind was blown.

Soccer also sucks. I'd rather watch baseball. The only thing as crappy (to watch) as soccer is basketball. Basketball is basically the hand version of soccer, except instead of no points its hundreds of points.

That's because parents are lazy. It's 1000x easier to dress a kid for soccer than for hockey. It's also way cheaper when it comes to equipment.

I think it's what your parents watch while you're young that dictates what you'll be into. My folks are huge soccer fans (Europeans), and surprise surprise, both their kids are as well. My folks didn't watch hockey or baseball, and even today I find it hard to get into hockey and impossible to get into baseball. I can't believe people actually watch baseball!

Personally, I'm glad most Americans are not big soccer fans. They've pissed and shat on enough good things that I'd rather they just leave soccer alone.

Exactly, as far as watching 'sports' went, my dad watched English premier league and WRC most Saturdays, so I'd sit and watch that too, the fact that most of us played soccer for our communities also pushed for the love of the sport I guess, at games we weren't classmates/best friends anymore . Same goes for martial arts, my dad watched alot of those HK kungfu movies, so of course my brother and I went and signed up for karate and hap ki do.

WAY cheaper, cleats/kneepads/goalkeeping gloves if you were chosen as one, even cheaper if you went to Sports Swap to get smelly old used ones. Community team usually provided jerseys/shorts/socks, fees paid through volunteering most of the time too.

I remember going with a friend from elementary who played for one of the 'middle class with good minor hockey teams' neighborhoods , to shop for new hockey equipment with his dad, it' came out to some crazy amount of $$$ (at the time), I remember my dad only spend $100 for all my soccer equipment.
