+1 on keeping Giordano. We finally have a solid leadership group to mentor the young stars of this team. Getting rid of the captain would send a very bad vibe throughout the locker room. Plus, dude still has game and can produce. DO NOT TRADE!
That being said, he is getting older and haven't been through an 80+ game season for a while, so tread carefully with what you plan on offering him. Nothing more than $7.5M AAV for 5 years.

In all seriousness, I would have loved Mike Green a few years ago but now I think he's on the decline. He's still good but he's reached his peak a while ago. By the time we're competing for a cup for real, he wouldn't be a top D. I read somewhere that he was quoted as saying he had no interest in playing in the Western league anyways.
The D you want to focus on are Tyson Barrie or Jake Muzzin type players who are just starting to get their game going. Of course, these type of players command a big price tag, but with good reason.

We have a lot of NHL capable forwards ready to play next year.... I'm hoping we move a couple of these forwards for younger 20-25 year old d-men to help out on the backend.
Our defense core needs to start getting younger in the next 3-5 years. Plus come playoff time you can never have enough NHL ready defensemen.

Flames have a few decent defense prospect in Tyler Wotherspoon, Patrick Sieloff, Kenney Morrison and Brandon Hickey, just to name a few. They're not what you call "blue chip", but can slowly transition to the big club when time is right. It's not all that gloomy on the backend, but adding more depth in this area is certainly a plus. They'll probably be drafting some RW and D this coming draft to address this.

We need a bit of size, im not saying go out and get a goon on the back end but a bit of size (Byfuglien, or however you spell his name) would be nice, especially against the bigger more physical teams like Boston, LA, Anahiem..
