Firstly, that is certainly not going "too far". That's going "perfectly far".

It is indeed unfortunate that someone will probably get charged for this, but we are talking maximum security. It is possible whoever did it is in jail for the rest of their life anyway, so they may have little to lose.

I am actually surprised this happened. After the first beating, I thought they would be forced to protect him in some manner. But now that he has been beaten again, you can rest assured his council will do what they can to make that happen. Therefore, the best outcome here for all is that he doesn't ever wake up.
