Default extraction wastewater responsible for earthquake surge....

    Huh....
    http://m.bbc.com/news/science-environment-28128772

Researchers say there has been a forty-fold increase in the rate of quakes in the US state between 2008-13.

The scientists found that the disposal of water in four high-volume wells could be responsible for a swarm of tremors up to 35km away.

Their research has been published in the journal, Science.

Unfortunately the technology has just gotten better and they track it way better now.

That was straight out of my NATURAL DISASTERS textbook. No correlation sorry Toma keep trying.

lol. No, I know, scientists are lying about about evolution, vaccines, global warming, and now, earthquakes.

Move along, nothing to see here.

The researcher is (appropriately) pretty cautious about stating anything definite and both the sciencemag article and BBC flip-flop on if it's troubling or not, if it's linked and what worse earthquake(s) could occur.

That said, the added water pressure from that high of volume isn't that unreasonable to induce faulting at small-scale. Additionally they admit they don't know the geology all that well which is a little odd. It's hard to really know what to take away from this if you don't know the reservoir properties of the formation they're injecting into (not stated in either article).

    This isn't really big news.

The US Army Engineering Corps are trialing water injection as a method for triggering earthquakes.

It's been demonstrated that lubing a fault can release existing seismic force.

It will be interesting to see if this technology can be used to prevent the pre-conditions of earthquakes by having several smaller earthquakes instead of one big one.
