Surprised we're not further down the list. I'd be more worried about The Taliban or some African diamond warriors than our military.

North Korea sure does a lot of dick swingin' for only being #35 on that list.

I guess it goes to show its not the size of your army, but the lunacy of the man running it.

The economic data is what's frightening. China can pay off their entire debt TOMORROW and has as much purchasing power as the USA. Russia can almost pay off their entire debt. USA... has 1% of their debt in reserve in foreign exchange and gold.

Also, while nuclear power may not be taken into account, but the top 6 countries are all nuclear armed.

Just look at our defence budget and anyone can tell why we are where we are on that list. Just as the website says:

Regardless of military strength in numbers, war is still driven by financing as much as any one leader or weapon.

Forget Brazil, how the hell does Japan outrank ANYONE?

When they surrendered to the allies at the end of WWII, the surrender documents stated that Japan was not allowed to develop any military force exceeding what they would need to defend themselves, and that they were not allowed to act aggressive in a military fashion...

^By rephrasing the rules is how.

Just last week Abe said he would 'reinterpret' the rules about the JSDF's limitations, they're trying to skirt around the 1946 declaration and boost their military numbers and budget, to which the Americans are fine with due to the interest of security for the region (China/DPRK concerns). Naturally there's a huge backlash from Japanese citizens and of course China. Besides that they have one of the most technologically advanced militaries in the world atm.

    On a side note:

There is a loophole for those who are looking to drop their US citizenship quickly. Join an army/navy/airforce that is currently at war with the US, and then quit shortly thereafter.

It is actually far quicker than filling out the "renounce US citizenship" forms, and will for certain - sever any ties with the IRS.

Not that it would be the smartest thing to do, but if you are really that desperate to sever ties with the US - It is without the doubt, quickest. Just mentioning for reference... You just never know who might take this route. I can imagine some expat retiree with cancer, no kids - who does not want to file a lifetime of paperwork and possibly have his entire life savings taken by the IRS and/or tax lawyers.

Pretty sure that joining the armed forces of a nation that is at war with your own would be treason, even in Canada.

But I'm almost positive it is in the USA.

Yea it actually is. Which is why the US is conducting drone strike operations of "american citizens" overseas who are engaged in terrorism.

Would treason be a small penalty compared to losing life savings?

After all, the US cannot enforce treason if you are an expat that has never set foot on US soil. All they can do is send subpoenas and threats to appear in US court.

If you only had a few years left, I'd rather have the money - and would not care about being labelled treasonous. For much of US history, being a British citizen was outright traitorous to the US.

There are technically about one million people in Canada that could be considered "US peoples" for the purposes of US IRS taxation. And I get the feeling a good half of those are FUBAR'ed now.

It surprisingly, could be a valid in unorthodox way for people to break off from the US. Becoming a Iraq citizen, and then becoming stateless might also do the trick. Going straight to stateless does not seem to be "agressive" enough to repel the IRS taxman. I could see a Canadian "accidental american" with assets over $10 million, going to Iraq specfically to be labelled an enemy of the US - just to avoid the IRS. In a weird way, I think people are already doing it.

    Dun dun duhhhh..

Fuck the US. Modern day Nazis.

One of two countries in the world that if you are a US citizen, even if you have never set foot on US soil, you have to file and potentially pay taxes to the IRS every single year.

Then try their tax system out for size. Costing a friend of mine in that very boat $2500 to file 3 years worth of simple personal taxes, you HAVE to disclose all your bank accounts and balances, and now, new law, banks around the world have to disclose banking info directly to the IRS "in advance".

    Hitler would be proud.

I'm pretty surprised these guys ranked Canada higher than many others.

So far as Brazil vs Canada - hah that's funny.

Brazil's army has 2000 Modern Tanks, Infantry Fighting vehicles, and self propelled artillery pieces. Add another couple thousand towed arty pieces, 15,000 vehicles and trucks, and 100 helicopters, 1/3 of which are gunships of various types.

Brazil's standing army is at least 10x what Canada's is, and then some.

    Brazil's Navy -

Brazil operates a CATOBAR Carrier with helos and A4 Skyhawk attack aircraft, around 40 aircraft total.
    5 German Made 209 Class Diesel/Electric Subs
    10 Frigates
5 Corvettes, some of which are very modern types.
    6 Minesweepers
4 or 5 Amphib assault ships
80 other ships, patrol craft, attack boats, supply ships, refueling tankers, etc.

    Brazil's Air Force

Brazil has bought around 50 Grippen Fighters
    50+ F5E Tigers
    50 AMX Fighters
200+ Turbo prop various counter insurgency/close air support aircraft
    30 New Tankers/transport on order
    30 Large Transport C130/various
    100 Light Transport/utility
    9 P3 Orion ASW/etc
    16 Various AEW/ELINT/EW aircraft
    100's of various Helos

Brazil has a much larger military than Canada, but a country that is 7 times as large in terms of population would, would it not? Many people think of Brazil as this tiny little South American country, not realizing that it has 200 million people.

Japan's military post ww2 was designated the "Japan self defense forces". A trip to google will give the details of their military, and it is VERY strong, and very capable. A lot of high tech in house tech put into already very capable platforms, example the Japanese F15's, the F2's (F16 variants), and other such systems. The Japanese navy frigates and destroyers have advanced Aegis type array systems, their d/e submarine force is excellent as well. Anyone writing off Japan is a poorly armed or incapable opponent is making a mistake. Quick numbers - Japan's Air force, 210 advanced F15 Fighters, 90+ F2 fighters, 70 F35s on order, 75 F4 Phantoms, over 15 AWACS/AEW aircraft with pretty unique and advanced radar systems built "in house". Over 400 very advanced fighters supported by the best airborne warning and control aircraft in the world. Hardly a push over.
