That doesn't look like it made it to the ground and just burnt up:

Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 metres when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday. The Buk missile system can fire missiles up to an altitude of 22,000 metres.

I don't know if the rebels have Buk systems but both Russia and Ukraine certainly do. RIP to those passengers

jebus, if it actually got hit by a missile, some serious international shit will go down i'm guessing, someone shooting gdamned AAA at a commercial passenger jet

    edit:

I guess ATC is telling all commercial airlines to make immediate course changes:

I read the rebels managed to shoot down a Frogfoot in the same area just last night and a few weeks before, they captured a UKR AA base located nearby which had some Buks in storage.

But this one with the help of satellites already looking over the area by certain countries i'm sure, would be easy to spot smoke plumes coming from a missile, whether it be from the ground or from a fighter jet from either sides.

And with so many instances of AAA and AA shooting down helicopters, fighter jets and those AN-26 transports, you'd think commercial airliners would totally avoid the area period, kinda crazy that theyre still flying over that part of the world.

Its happened before, and from the past there was denial, then admittance then apologies.

CIA was probably behind it all, constantly looking for a Reason for WW3. God, I hope China and Russia put an end to it once and for all if it comes to that.

So, someone thought it wise to fly planes over a war zone where military planes fly, bomb, and have been shot down?

    Really?

Is this serious? There are commercial flights over eastern Ukraine?

no shoulder fired missile is going to reach that high up.

best guess is rebels with sophisticated Russian military shit because the Russian military wouldn't be stupid enough to shoot down what was obviously a passenger plane. The only question would be, why would the Russians give such advanced equipment to rebels. You'd think they'd limit them to lower end stuff.

This is stupid. I would be lividly furious if someone thought they should not be re routing commercial flights. Clearly, it's on purpose to entice such an incident. Civilians as pawns to further an Agenda?

^ They already shot down a few AN-26s, they should totally be diverting flights over there, but a 777 at that altitude,

edit: how could the operator have not known the difference unless he accidentally pressed the fire button or the system was on search and scan with auto-engage (i.e: a simple minded rebel with zero experience in a captured AAA vehicle) or a fighter pilot who fked up badly.

A Stinger/Igla/Strela MANPADs for something that was flying at 30000 ft? no way, like the reports have said, had to be a Buk system or air-to-air from a fighter jet.

cant be air to air because no Russian fighter would be authorized to fire on an obviously identified passenger plane. A pilot would easily be able to see what type of plane it was. From the ground, you can argue confusion from some untrained rebel group.

When I followed military shit, they had manpads reaching 25,000 feet... in the 90's!

    It's not inconceivable.

Seeing as the "rebels" have shot down another two planes in the area pretty sure it was them that accidentally targeted the plane. Comrade Putin sure did create a mess. Blame lies squarely with the Russians if it was the "rebels".
