Our plans seem to consist of hoping Badlands or the Airdrie track get up and running before the 3rd runway gets built. Some say we have 5-10 years, i'm a bit more optimistic that we can get ~15 out of it.
Considering Castrol just built their road course i doubt its closing anytime soon.
It's leased land from the airport. They have as much security in their future as Racecity did.Originally posted by Ca_Silvia13

Calgary's more recent history...So for the last 2-3 years, nothing in the Calgary region and nothing concrete in the future.
- Shephard Dragway (drag strip) 1963-1974 - just to the southeast of Barlow Trail and 114 Avenue SE
- Stampede Speedway (oval) 1967-1970 just to the east of Centre Street on the north side of Nose Creek
- Circle 8 Speedway (oval) 1971-1980 - just the above track renamed
- The new Stampede Raceway (oval) 1981-1985 - just to the east of 68th Street SE north on 50th Avenue
- Calgary International Speedway (drag strip) 1975-1984 - just to the southeast of Barlow Trail and 114 Avenue SE (formerly known as Shephard Dragway - see above)
- Race City Motorsport Park (oval, drag strip, road course, other) 1985-2011 - 68th Street SE and 114 Avenue
- Rocky Mountain Raceway Park (oval) 2004-2010 - east of Aldersyde across the Highwood River

and im pretty sure badlands is pretty concrete...
^Still a ways away though before it will be open for people to use.
thought the plan was to get a track on the ground asap and then build everything else after so we have something for next season? or has that changed... havent seen an update for a whileOriginally posted by xnvy

This happens once a year.
CASTROL IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
/THEEND
I'm not sure if Badlands could be considered as near to Calgary - I was focussing on auto racing facilities relatively close to Calgary. Anyhow, back on topic...
Edmonton, Leduc County start mandated annexation talks - link, don't know if any of this would impact Castrol if it were to come to be.
EIA's third runway - link, some interesting reading.
Lot's of balls up in the air with respect to this expansion but it does appear that Castrol's future is most definitely at risk.
last faq speaks of this runway being 20 years away... and the entire article speaks of 2025... so.... this was written in 05.... well before castrol built the road course...Originally posted by speedog

I'm not going to argue dates or whatever - the simple fact remains that EIA is planning a third runway and that current plan would take out Castrol.
If I look at the map, I have to wonder why the new runway can't go to the SW of the existing runway 1 (12-30) is the same orientation - land would still have to be acquired but there would be less impact to other things like Castrol, the church and highway 19 although a major negative impact of this would be so many more flights over Leduc proper.
I suppose they could build it to parallel runway 2 as well further to the southwest as well but maybe prevailing winds are why they might not do this.
Will fuck off, again.
its like you dont even read your own information...
Somebody quoting things without reading them? On the internet?Originally posted by ercchry

GET THE FUCK OUTTA TOWN
I'm enjoying the present. Things come and go. A race track isn't going to stop an airport expansion - no chance.Originally posted by speedog
hopefully the racing community up there is already planning for the future...
I can't tell you how many times I heard "I'll go to Stratotech soon, I just need to do X to my car....I'm not ready yet...probably next summer...I just don't have time...". I heard the same excuses for not running at Namao, City Centre and Race City. Back in the day I'm sure people had the same excuses for not getting out to Edmonton Speedway.
If anything this runway talk should remind people to enjoy the present. Get out to an event and have fun.
