    Default Registration plate.

    Hi,

I have a question which needs to be answered urgently.

I am going to sell my car in a few days and will be buying a new car maybe after 2 - 3 years. My question is regarding the registration plate. Should I return it to the registry or keep it? If I keep it do I need to pay / renew every year even if it is not registered with a car or will the renewal be stopped until it is registered. I dont know how it works.. Any ideas? Please suggest..

    Thanks

Keep it, you can use it later. You don't need to keep it registered. I have two extra plates sitting in my garage.

you can keep it but if you have time left on the plate you can return it and get a partial registration refund. there really is no benefit to keeping your plate unless you like the numbers.
every time you renew your vehicles registration your allowed a new plate.

I'm not sure if it will work that way with the plate re-design though...

    Availability
The new plate will be available in early 2015. All vehicles, including trailers, motorcycles and off-highway vehicles, will need the new plate.

    Plate Numbers
To help keep administrative costs down, Albertans will receive a new plate number when they renew their vehicle registration starting in early 2015.

Good point. I don't know how that's gonna work. I have a vanity plate, it would suck to have to pay for it again. From your quote, it says new plate number. It sounds like they are junking all the old numbers instead of giving out new plate with your current numbers. That's kinda dumb, they just added a letter not too long ago because we ran out of combo. Hey that's the government we are talking about.

^ I asked at the registry and the lady there claimed that we'd have to re-apply for the vanity plates again.

If you keep a plate for too long inactive it cannot be re-registered again. I kept my first plate and it is invalid now RIP 6 digits

This is horse shit. I don't mind paying ~30-40 bux for replacement. Another 220? Who wants to join me for a riot?

Does it show the price there somewhere? I can only see where is says we can re-order another one, not that it's going to cost the original price.

I don't see pricing neither, just being mentally prepared for the worst.

    How do you get $220?

From Service Alberta's own document (link), it would appear that a personalized plate runs $185 +GST. Now there is an additional service charge for which there has been no ceiling set and maybe that's where you got charged more by the registry you went to.

I may be wrong. The number came from my limited memory.

Each of the six registries I called when getting mine was charging $220. A few friends in Edmonton also paid $220, so it's probably just the accepted amount.

+1 That's the number I hear all the time.

I've been trying so hard to hang onto my xxx-xxx plate... FML.
Maybe I'll just give into getting a vanity if that's what it takes to keep something I like.

From what I was told people with vanity plates are able to keep them in their current state (wild rose)

And the amount to purchase a vanity plate is 220.

With the new plate design (which hasn't been passed yet), every Albertan will have 2 years to switch their current plates to the new ones... WITH an additional cost to you. If you have trailers, get ready to pony up $27 to replace that plate. If you have vanity plates, service alberta has decided to charge just the cost to re-order, not the cost to produce a new one. Cost to re-order is ~$80 and you will get your personalized plates sent to you.

Yes, including services fees and taxes, all personalized plates run around the 220 mark

As far as the original question, if you have more than 4 months remaining on the plate and you want the refund, return the plate. If you have less than that, don't waste your time at the registry.

The whole thing is a bullshit money grab. The shitty thing is, it always gets taken out on the front line staff when you get the old fucktard that wont spend the extra cash and it's the agents fault for the increase. The worst part is that they are thinly veiling that they just don't want Wild Rose on the plates - under the premise that the police service is asking for reflective plates. Which they are, don't get me wrong - but they've been asking for almost 20 years and now all of a sudden BAM and we're removing the Wild Rose portion??? Go fuck yourself...... Errrrr... I mean, ya GO GOVERNMENT!! I love my job
