Default local jeweller to resize engagement ring

Hey, My fiances engagement ring is too big. The ring was purchased in The states so taking it back to them isn't really going to happen. I am looking for a local jeweller (preferably in the SW) to resize the ring and to do an independent inspection. I don't want to drop of the ring only to have it shipped out somewhere else leaving her without it for a week. I would prefer if it was done same/next day. Also have heard a few horrow stories about people getting their rings destroyed so I am a little bit nervous about where it goes to.

    TIA

He's downtown in the Scotia Center, but I can confidently recommend Justin at Gem by Carati. Always a pleasure to deal with and clearly takes pride in his work.

i hear good things about justin as well, however i called him to do this and he wanted it for a week. I myself feel sketched out the possibility that a diamond might be switched out etc.

I PM'd justing when I made the thread. Hopefully they will be able to do it for me.

Completely agree. I really want it to be done in house without shipping it somewhere. Apparently it is quite difficult to find.

Did find this place though that will do same day for about $200.

Will probably go with them if Justing can't help me out.

Same day at $200 isn't too bad. I am gonna have to buy a ring in the new few months here so going to start shopping around shortly. What are your guys' suggestions for places to check them out at?

go to Maggies in Chinook...they did a ring for me a couple months ago on the same day for $50 more...of a grand total of $150.

I got the ring the same day. I was in the boat feeling skeptical of the possibility that a diamond might be switched out..but I had them check all the diamonds before and after and I was left with piece of mind!

Sorath, we've been around for 35 years... diamond switching and longevity don't go hand in hand.

Sizing or repairs take about a week as they go in the queue. Repairs are typically completed on a first come first serve basis.

Don't diamonds have a serial number etched into the girdle to match the AGS/EIA report? Can't you just have it checked before/after the swap? If they don't match I imagine the shop would be on the hook for your replacement, no?

I'm sure it'll fit her six to seven months after the wedding. They all give up and pack on a few extra after that.

Smart to think about that kind of thing. I think the only way to get around it is to build a relationship with your jeweller, vet their credentials, and check the quality of work (especially at first) to make sure it's what you want.

OP, I 100% recommend Justin or Charlotte at Gem by Carati. I've worked with both extensively (including when I bought my wife her engagement ring) and have never had a bad experience.

Justin communicates quickly and does exactly what he says he will do.

He's downtown, but you'll be glad you chose to work with him.

My wife had her ring re-sized at Troy Jewellers on Edmonton Trail (in Bridgeland). You could try them, they're awesome.

Perhaps I'm being too rational here but, when it comes to the concern of having a diamond switched, what's the difference between someone having it for a week and someone having it for a few hours?

I've seen how quickly a goldsmith can pull a diamond from it's setting and it only takes a few mins. I'm sure a shady jeweller could pull a diamond and switch it with an inferior one very quickly.

So, unless you were planning on looking over the jewellers shoulder while they did the work, I really don't see how one carries more risk than the other.

I just don't want her to be without it for a week for something that takes an hour. Also would like to minimize the number of people who have access to it. Best way to do that is to limit the time they have it.

If anyone is so worried about diamond switching, why not ask for the diamond to be removed? You can bring the diamond home (where you'll probably lose it anyway lol) and after the ring is resized you can bring the diamond back to be reset.

No one wants to steal your diamond. You over paid for yours and its something that any Jewellery store can get a nicer one for way less.

If you are this paranoid, how do you know the jeweler didn't just sell you a fake right from the start?
